Morin is likely to be good but doesn't have the potential Bryam has (Morin likely a very solid 3-5 two way defender).

Bryam has legit top pairing potential, none of the players listed about have this.

With the value of the contract that Byram would sign for, the Flames would be obligated to give up at least their own 2026 First Round pick. There's no chance the Flames risk it in next year's draft.

One, he has to want to sign with Calgary. And two, none of the low end/ middle teams are giving up their 2026 first rounder as compensation.

I don't buy that he's good enough but I suspect he'd be gone already if that wasn't the calibre of return Buffalo is looking for. These types of defencemen tend to return quite a bit (contract extension talks notwithstanding of course)

Not sure I understand the Byram hate. He is 24, which matches with the age range this team looking for. He played 22mins a night last year. He produced 1.31 5v5 points/60, is better than Coronato. Calgary’s highest producing defenseman was Weegar at 0.86 5v5 points/60.

He was stuck behind Makar in Colorado on the PP, and stuck behind Dahlin and Powers in Buffalo on the PP. Here he would be the QB on PP1. So I think his offensive production would receive a nice bump.

He needs some work defensively, but everyone in Buffalo needed work defensively. I think a lot of that will be ironed out in Calgary’s system.

Of course everything comes down to acquisition cost. I wouldn’t move Parekh, Wolf, Coronato or any 1st round pick, but I could see a package built outside of those pieces.

The problem is that outside of those players, Calagry doesn't have much else to lead the package compared to other teams.

The best player in competing packages is often the winner. A collection of stuff you don't mind giving up is not that.

Unless you'd be willing to move the 2025 first round picks.

Did you think K'Andre Miller is good enough to get the return he did?

These 25 and under defenceman with draft pedigree do tend to hold value a bit longer because there's still hope that they can round out their games and get to another level.

I don't know if Id want to pay the Miller return here. But I could see it being close to that. Depends on how Buffalo values some immediate NHL players.

Like you said, it comes down to acquisition cost. Personally, I don't see adding an offensive defenseman as the main need for the team. So if you are giving up prime assets, there is a potential opportunity cost say if a decent center or top line offensive player becomes available and you don't have the pieces to make that trade.
