Rasmus will get a good return, but I feel like some should go take a look at what #2/#3 defencemen get traded for.

1st + 2nd + 2nd is effectively the upper end.

I’d expect to see equivalent value to a 1st + 2nd round pick, in whatever form that takes.

First and two seconds. The second second next year? Sold.

It really depends where these picks fall. If this year’s draft picks are involved, there is a huge chasm of difference in value based on where in the first round the pick is located.

San Jose as an example holds Dallas’ 1st this year (30th), their own 2nd (33rd), and Edmonton’s 1st next year.

I’d be pretty excited to see Dallas’ 1st or SJ’s 2nd + Edmonton’s 1st in 2026. I think that’d be fine value.

Having three 1st rounders in 2026 is a good spot to be in.

For Andersson, I would be disappointed with those picks. Once Ekblad is off of the board, Andersson is the best D available this summer and next.

One might argue that Carlson is better but with him being 7 years older than Andersson it would be a tough sale and even with Andersson's drop in points this season (which I would relate to the Flames overall drop in scoring). Andersson's 11 goals beats out all of the other D in both the 2025 and 2026 UFA groups and is tied for 14th overall for D goal scoring in the season.

2 late 1sts (or an early 2nd) is not a good return for trading that asset.

It is difficult to find a balanced valuation of Andersson on this message board because you have a vocal group yelling that Andersson is worthless or at best a second line player and then you have the other group who love Andersson and think he is so good that we are crazy to think about trading him.

Even though I am likely to be disappointed, I do think that the combination of Andersson's real value to hockey professionals and the scarcity of top line D for teams that do not have time to grow their own will bring back a significant asset and not a hodgepodge of spare parts.

Are people saying he's worthless or are people just being realistic? Find a few examples of a player of his calibre, age, contract status, etc. bringing back anything more than what has been suggested?

Nobody is shooing Andersson away.
The guy wants a contract that doesn’t make sense for CGY to sign, both sides have agreed it’s time to move on.

I think it would be foolish to overpay an aging Andersson just simply because we owe it to him. Would cripple the franchise for its duration. Makes far more sense to honor the mutual agreement to move on and obtain assets to do so.

Understand there might be a cone of silence but any more info on potential destinations/return? Be as vague as possible if that helps as we all appreciate the info but respect the confidentiality you must have to take into consideration

I am in the minority for sure but I would like Raz and the Flames to agree on a deal that’s good for both the team and player. You need veteran leadership from a guy who leads by example and who wants to be here. It would be good for the franchise on many levels.

I agree with this sentiment but we still have Weegar, Kadri, Huberdeau and Coleman to fill this role

I’ll be honest, at this point there’s been nothing shared with me in terms of destinations or return and I think that’s because they simply can’t leak that information.

I do know that Carolina, Dallas, Ottawa, SJ, Anaheim and Toronto have all shown significant interest, and a lot of them going back to the deadline this year. With that said, I’d wager there’s a lot more teams on that list now that it’s pretty much known both sides would like to move on.

Craig’s job now is to maximize value and move him around his 6 team no trade list. Craig has a lot of respect for Andersson, so I’m guessing he’s keeping him informed as I do believe an extension might be part of the deal as well (to maximize value)

The one thing I keep coming back to is a package with Andersson and someone else to make a bigger deal… it just feels like a very real possibility.

Maybe one of our unsigned RFA’s or a Pospisil etc.

Going to be a very busy week!

Thanks Royle. I like the idea of maximizing the return in the Andersson deal but I really hope it’s not Zary as the potential RFA included in the trade. I have liked his development and the skillset he has. And if he is part of any trade, I would want it to be a very good return because he still has the potential to develop into a skilled 2nd line center in the NHL.

The rumours are he wants 8x8.25 . That’s a no go for me. Term is the big one. At most I would give him 6 years, preferably 5. The extension doesn’t kick in till he’s 30 and I don’t see the point of having him suck up huge cap space when flames are ready to compete in 4-5 years playing on bottom pairing.

This is the right approach that Conroy is taking with Anderson.

Had the Flames opted to rebuild in 2022 after Johnny walked and Chucky left they could have made the decision then Andersson was going to be part of the rebuild and the team would be in their third straight draft picking high and they would have got a more futures based return for Chucky so possibly ready to push forward and extending Anderson may have made sense.

They went the other way route and have Kadri, Huberdeau, Weegar all signed until their late 30’s on big tickets and they need more young assets so with the flames choosing that path 3 years ago it makes so much sense to part ways now

Don’t get your hopes up too high. If Ekblad isn’t signed before July 1st, I think most teams (if not all) are going to want to participate in the Ekblad sweepstakes before having to offer assets for Andersson. Unless of course we find that contending team that would rather pay up the assets for Andersson at 50% and not have to worry about quadrupling that cap hit until 2026.
