But defensively? Not sure that removing the -38 d-man will leave you worse off.

He was an outlier in that regard on a team full of hard working guys. At times was aggressively bad against tough match ups. No shame in it because he wasn't being deployed how he'd be best suited on a deeper team, but after the mass exodus last year there weren't other options.

Flames have some shutdown type young players in the system in Brz and Crushnikov. I wonder if they try them (or look for a stopgap through trade/FA signing).
Tough ask putting rookies up against the McDavid and Makinnon lines of the NHL. Playing shut down D against the elite forwards in the NHL is probably the hardest skill to develop.

I’m still absolutely in support of trading him, but even with Ras’ -38, he is the most well equipped on this team, outside of maybe Weegar, to eat the hardest minutes, so unless they sign a very experienced shutdown defender, they will take a step back on the defensive side.

I would be genuinely surprised if they trade Andersson and don’t bring in a shut down guy who can play 2nd/3rd pairing. Won’t be as good as Andersson offensively and will probably be older, but likely in that Hanley/Pachal range (surprisingly solid, but not exciting).

Everyone needs to also remember he has some trade protection, and that will impact how this goes. if the teams that are interested are on his no-trade list it will complicate the process a lot…

Another reason why I'm sure this will happen soon. You don't want to trade Rasmus mid-season and be stuck with a big hole you can't fill.

I think thats the plan i just hope whoever they consider is a good skater. I think our lack of mobility from the back end was one of our offensive issues last year.

For me there is no question the flames need to take steps back in different places as they rebuild, with how old the veteran core is that will happen through declining performance even if you sit on your hands. I think the key is finding enough journeyman plug nhlers to eat the hard minutes while the youngsters step up so you shield them mentally, but being realistic, the goal in the next couple years has to be trying to contend long term not just trying to minimize the beatings against top teams now.

Tampa is a team I keep looking at for Rasmus, if calgary retain 50% he's almost a perfect fit there, they have some good puck movers but zero goal scoring from their blueline after Hedman. Geekie would be exactly the kind of player the flames are after and i hope hasn't blown up to the point that Tampa can't trade him - his bridge deal end of next year wont be cheap. Howard is also an exciting young player if geekie is off limits and he would sign in canada. Would look nice on the opposite wing from coronato. McDonough coming off the books next year when any extension kicks in and moser moving into the #2 lhd spot. Feels like it makes a lot of sense and would be a place he'd re-sign

Who is a better defenceman: -38 Rasmus or +14 Bouchard?

Roman Josi was -26

Is there any hope of this turning into a #1C. Continue to wonder where that’s going to come from.

To whom would NHL GM's offer a bigger contract?

Friedman’s second thought kind of adds important but funny colour commentary to this discussion:

Quote:
1. On Rasmus Andersson: the feeling across the league is the talented defenceman is ready for something new. I believe the Flames are willing, but only when they get what they want. There’s significant interest, which helps.

2. Isiah Thomas, who ran the Raptors as I broke into the business, taught me a valuable lesson: “Around the draft, everybody lies.” There’s lots of crazy stuff that’s hard to verify; the world changes in a hurry. Keep that in mind with everything you read and hear, including from me.

In his previous five seasons before being traded to Florida for Spencer Knight and a 1st round pick Seth Jones was a combined -126, he was than another -6 after joining the Panthers.

-126, Spencer Knight and a 1st round pick, just saying.

We are talking about plus minus as an indication of defensive ability. Who is better defensively?

He has been consistently offensively once he was given time and part of top pairings. Can expect early 20 year old D to generate 40-50 points...

Andy did heavy 5v5 mins and lifting for the flames, a team that finished 4th worst in goal scoring last year. His +\- last year is likely being view through that lens as it should be, I don’t for a minute think that Andy is a black hole or liability defensively, especially on a high end team with an established core that’s contending.

From everything I've heard, the whole goal was to get an idea of where both sides were at so they could have it sorted at or before the draft.
Both want to go into this next season on the same page long term.

Making stats say whatever you want to say is fun. While your statement is true, those two seasons were 50 and 49 (50 pt pace). Here's another true statement:

For the last 5 full seasons, Andersson has played at a 41.5 pt pace.

IMO, this is almost a certainty.

Wonder if Montreal is a location he would go to. They need RSD. Maybe we can get our 1st back. Where is Kirby Dach’s value at? Is he reclamation project at this point, or salary dump?

Owen Beck would be a solid add for the Flames.

Would Cayden Primeau be a guy who could work as a back up to Wolf?

Sure, if you average it out. In his last 2 seasons (the two most recent ones) he's played at a 36 point pace. All my point was, you can't guarantee that he's a 40-50 point defenceman because for most of his career, he hasn't been. I didn't say he doesn't have value. I just don't think he's guaranteed to hit that.

DAL looks like a more realistic trade partner if Dumba or Lyubushkin are coming back.
