Something to think about. What if Bourque doesn’t want to come back? Can’t be happy with being scratched all playoffs and watching stankoven go to Carolina and get a shot
DeBoer is gone but maybe he’s got a bad taste in his mouth. One can only hope and Nill is forced into a bad deal.

If I am reading this right, the Stars had $48,334 in cap space after the Duchene signing. Moving out Marchment frees up $4.5M but also creates a hole in the roster. So they have 8 forwards, 7 D, and 2 G under contract.
Outstanding is 2 RFAs (Bourque and Lundkvist), which would get them to 9 forwards and 8 D and they would still need to sign 4 forwards to get to a full roster with 1 extra forward (2 extra D).
No way you can sign 6 players with only $4.5M. League minimum is $775k. Also, good luck signing your RFAs to league minimum:
- Lundkvist was $1.25M last season and likely expects a small raise.
- Bourque was on his ELC and probably expects the same as Steel ($2.1M) which is fair considering their production is comparable.
The steps they are likely considering:
- Moving out Dumba and Lyubushkin frees up another $7M, which gets them to $11.5M in space but then you need to add at least 1 more D back for depth.
- If you allocate $2M to each RFA then there is still $7.5M to fill the 5 remaining spots (4F, 1D)
- If 4 of the signed players are league minimum ($3.1M in total) then you have about $4.4M to try to keep Granlund, his last contract was $5M.
- If either RFA gets an offer sheet, you probably let him walk and try to find another league minimum option.
The Stars are going to be so very interesting to watch this summer.

Friedman on the 32 thoughts podcast thinks there were other teams that offered more for Marchment, but Nill ultimately sent Marchment to Seattle because there was no state income tax like Texas.

The Stars will almost certainly walk away from Benn. People loved how aggressive they were going after Rantanen, but adding a $12m winger to a roster that was already right up against the cap blew a gaping hole in their long-term balance sheet. They’re still on the hook for Seguin for two more seasons at $9 mil, and Harley is going to get a huge raise in a year. That’s the context for exploring a trade of Robertson before he has to be re-upped - they have too many hungry mouths to feed so they have to make some difficult choices.

I'm on my 3rd coffee - so may be a bit too over caffeinated - but why would this matter? It matters potentially to the player, but if I am the org - why not ship him where you can get more back in return? Unless of course it is to your arch rivals or say something like that. But I feel like I am really missing something h ere.

Feels like a player the Flames could have used.

Marchment signed as an UFA with the stars. Presumably the no state tax thing was important factor in choosing to sign with Stars.
Small details like trading him to a no tax state will probably get noticed by agents and entice more free agents, knowing that Nill will try to do right by you even if he has to move you for cap reasons.

Also means Calgary is at yet another disadvantage, where teams won't be willing to trade players here if they signed in tax free cities. Hopefully it's not a common issue, but yet another setback in being a fan of a Canadian team.

They should let Benn go, but I believe it was Friedman that mentioned the Stars are planning to re-sign him as he is very big part of the culture there.

According to some, doing right by their players is a loser GM attitude!

Yeah that sounds like a cover for...I think the Kraken suck and if he's there...he's less likely to hurt my team than if I was to trade him to like Minnesota.
I have to think come deadline the Kraken are selling him for a profit. That said, he has 8 goals and 16 points in his last 49 playoff games with Dallas, and 11 and 19 in 59 career playoff games. So they might be looking at that and thinking we need more from a third line, especially as you get deeper into the playoffs where third lines can really tip the scale in a series. That said..they brought Duchene back...although I guess he maybe helps you get to the playoffs a bit more.

Yes I get the "oh, doing him a solid" and sure some maybe vague benefit....but I have agree with something like Sylvan notes. Or everyone knows the Stars are in tough and Seattle....just gave the best, or least bad, offer.

He's a player any team could use, including Dallas. I'm surprised there wasn't more shopping around. He's was one of the players from Dallas that had a major fall off offensively in the playoffs, so maybe that's why he was on the chopping block?
Zero points and -5 in those last 4 Edmonton playoff games. I was pretty shocked by that actually. I thought he would've been one of the players to really push back against Edmonton.

A player like Marchment is much better off going to the team that will allow him to succeed the most and get the best contract. He's 30 and going into a contract year. His results from this season will create a huge swing in the value of his next contract. Looking at a relatively minor tax break is pretty short sighted.
