That would be amazing. Bear seems to have climbed up and stayed in a lot of rankings I've seen lately. I would be ecstatic if he was still around when the Flames pick.

Would be awesome to see McKenna play on a line with Luke Misa!

Today's FC mock draft builder is pretty stellar IMO:

18 : Bear, C
32: Ryabkin, C
Rd 2: Nilson, C
Rd 3: Ekberg, Fw
Rd 4: Frolov, G
Rd6: Jesper Kotajarvi , LD
Rd7: Tomas Galvas (LD)

Legs without a doubt. Horvat had red flags over his skating and he was able to improve substantially. Plus, Robataille wasn’t the best skater yet had a pretty good career.

Mentality is harder. The kid might have been told his poop doesn’t stink for a long time and that’s hard to undo. Kids like that end up on do not draft lists for a reason.

This is the kind of trade up scenario I could get behind. Only question would be is that enough from the blues side? Burke roasted Feaster for only getting a second for dropping down 9 slots in the 2012 draft. Granted that was 12 to 21 so maybe 19 to 32 doesn’t warrant more than a 2nd.

Still bummed over that lottery loss. One number made such a huge difference.

Wheeler posted his second first round mock, based on team fit, conversations he’s had as well as intel gathered from the combine. He’s got the Flames taking Cootes (over Reschny) and Kindel at 32.

He mentions he could see the Flames consider Ryabkin here, but he had poor fitness results and interviewed badly at the combine, so he’s pretty sure he’ll fall into the second round.

Just thinking out loud, but I wish we had another pick in the low twenties to spend on C Jack Nesbitt. It would be nice to have some size and snarl down the middle. Then take Will Horcoff, or Will Moore with our late first.

Pronman posted his article where he posts confidential scouting opinions, which I always find interesting. Quite a bit of love for Martin and O'Brien, less so for Eklund and Lakovic.

I love this analysis. My desired outcome absolutely.

Looks like Schaefer is the consensus #1, but there’s a wide variation on where Misa, Martone, Desnoyers, and Frondell fit #2-5. Throw in wild cards like Hagens, McQueen, Martin, and O’Brien, and we might see some surprises at the draft.

Sounds like no one will be going defence for a while, after Schaefer.

So sandman after hearing Ryabkin did poorly at the combine, are we off the Ryabkin train for our first round picks?

Wheeler had this to say about Lakovic in the mock article I linked above (Wheeler has Lak going to Columbus at 14):

Quote:
Going into the combine, Lynden Lakovic is a name I kept hearing a number of the teams in the 11-19 range liked. Then he did well in his interviews, by the sounds of it. I think he's going to go higher than people think, and I think the Penguins are the start of where he's in the mix.
He's the one player I wouldn't want, but I like hearing that he could be picked before Calgary goes up.

That Pronman piece is always a good read. Last year, it had a scout saying Sennecke was in the discussion to go right after Celebrini). But it's only opinion of a few scouts and execs so it's a little all over the map especially since the boards are all over the map this year.

The comments on Eklund, however, are interesting. He could be the type of guy that falls because a team likes that one player just a little bit better.

If the Flames get Ryabkin in round two, I might faint.

It's not worth much, but there's a pattern emerging in mock drafts of the Flames taking Cootes at 18. (NHL's updated mock has both guys saying Cootes to Calgary, and Wheeler had the same this morning)

I'd be excited by Cootes based on the U18 and Sandman's comments but I'd still prefer Reschny.

Mock draft including a bunch of trades (some of which have been rumored already as far as who's targetting who, and overall I think are fairly realistic possibilities... though would probably set a record for number of first round picks changing hands) :

https://www.bleachernation.com/black...s-with-trades/

Has the Flames moving up to #13 to get Bear (trading #18 & #32 to do it).
