High school just wouldn't be the same without the man exposing himself though.

I can't believe how much hate there is for this place. I used to love going there, who cares who is there, just enjoy your own night.
I am sure those people mock your clubs/pubs just as much as you do to theirs. I figure if I don't like a place I just won't go. Whats the difference to me if they are open and I don't like going there.
I think the people complaining about these cowboy or chachi guys are the ones who are stuck in high school, get over yourself, they are not going to change because you don't like them or where and how they hang out.

The bar is the bar. Its a place to get drunk, be seen, bad mouth other, fight, find your future wife, take some sluts home, get beaten up, get arrested, etc.
Bars are bars where ever you go. Whether you go to a bar with no cover and $3.00 drinks all nighte or a $20.00 cover and $9 beers, its the same . The sluts might have better t!t jobs and the guys wear designer wife beaters but its the same #####.
If you dont like the club scene, move to the burbs and go party at Joeys in the strip mall.

Before you get snippy about things, how about some more substance to your end of the "discussion", than what the first 3 entries contained?

What's to say - I expressed my opinion without insulting anyone? Or that I already said I wouldn't go before a half dozen people suggested it?

That's location's going to be trouble.... so close to the Regency Suites and the Hotel next door.... forget about peaceful sleep. That and it's close to nothing so bar hopping will be that much more difficult.
I wonder why Vicker's hasn't tried to get some land on the south side of the tracks, on 10th Ave. It's not like much else would like to be above those CPR tracks.

I know the article mentioned that 50+ locations were scouted before the first location was chosen. Maybe they did search as much this time - I dunno, I think the market would make finding any inner city space pretty tough.

Speaking of Cowboys, I met the chick Prince Harry was all ga-ga over
And from my point of view: ewwwww, girl needs to be taught how to use makeup, hair colour and perfume.
All I have to say is she confirmed why I'm gay....

Anyone hoping to have peaceful sleep and expect little or no noise in the downtown core isnt realistic anyways. That is part of Calgarys problem, is that the downtown is dead. I would prefer to have more clubs in the core, a happenin district, the more the merrier.
As far as those comparing Cowboys to other places, Cowboys is a CLUB. The Ship and Anchor, Melrose are pubs or lounges. To compare the two is a moot point. Calgary seems to have alot of lounge/pub type atmospheres, with a decline in actual clubs. A balance is truly needed, i would love to see an actual club district.

Regular noise is one thing, hootin & hollering drunk idiots is another.
Think of the circus around the current Cowboys at a 2am close. Then think of an apartment building and a hotel right next to it. Tell me if the two can peacefully coexist.
Club districts in the right area might be OK if they're in the right location(and I do realize the need for clubs), but the inevitable rise and fall of these establishments means they usually turn into large strips of seedy crap. The Taz/NYLA took like what, 15-20 years to finally die, but not before turning a 4 block diameter into a wasteland.

Wow, some of you need to lighten up and refrain from your blanket statements about the types of people that go to different bars.
I don't like Cowboys. This is because I typically don't like paying cover, country music, etc. To be quite honest, I never knew what the hype was about that place. I'd been a couple of times, and was never impressed. Not terrible, but far from special.
I actually went down yesterday evening (was on the stampede pubcrawl) and I had a great time. Again though, it was nothing extraordinary, but I liked it. And I'm not a jockhomo or roid monkey.
I like to go to the Ship & Anchor on occasion as well. I didn't really get the whole "big oil exec. trying not to look preppy" vibe, either. Again, nothing crazy, just a place to sit down and have a few drinks.
I don't really understand where these types of statements are coming from. Maybe I'm just missing something.

By the looks of the linenups everytime I drive by, they aren't hurting for your business. I heard a similar such conversation at the Ship and Anchor the other night. I found the whole conversation kind of ironic, because in my opinion there's not a bigger collection of white thrash in the city than at the Ship and Anchor.

I find both groups repulsive, but I find the Ship and Anchor group just to be a bunch of hypocrites. Daddy's oil exec. jobs pays their bills, they spend as much money on trying to look not preppy than the people are buying the Lacoste stuff, and they'd have a lot less time on their hands to sit around 17th drinking if it wasn't for Daddy paying the bills (see above). That whole crowd really makes my stomach turn.
Melrose is the place to drink. Everyone is there for a good time and you have a mixture of every crowd.
|
so how are you being any different then the ship guys who slam cowboys?
you're the melrose guy who slams the ship. It's all the same.

I agree with you about the patrons of the bars, but Cowboys management and door staff are true pieces of crap and deserve all the bashing in the world.
To me, Cowboys will always represent a part of Calgary I hate. The small amount of backwards, redneck racism that the city can't seem the shake, no matter how much it grows and embraces multiculturalism.
Not having a place like Cowboys would be a good step in getting past those sorts of issues, which Calgary will have to learn to do at some point.

LOL, I've never heard the term 'jockohomo'... that's flippin' hilarious, there's quite a bit of them in this city once I think about it. And yes, I can say that, because I've been through the bar scene here in Calgary and, in some ways, still in it, and I've met ALOT of people... so I have an opinion... a personal one, but an opinion nonetheless. It's actually one of the reasons why I won't go there anymore. It just seems too fake / contrived, the clientele aren't my type, the music is semi-lame, and the bouncers are complete knobs on power trips.
While I couldn't care less about going there, I do have to note that I am interested to see how the new location will pan out. I'm interested to see how a major bar will operate north of 7th Ave. I am completely pro-development in the inner-core, and aside from residential complaints, I am extremely interested in seeing how the dynamic of that area will evolve because of increased traffic / nightlife in the area.
Oh, and if anyone cares... HiFi, and arguably the Mynt, are much better bars in my opinion. Better music / clietnele / atmosphere. I just got back from Auckland, Singapore and Tokyo, and having been at bars in these cities, I feel that these two are comparable to others on the international stage in terms of what they offer for bar-goers. And that means ALOT less 'jockohomos', lol.... what a great word...

Excellent - now I have a choice between "Crack Mac's" on 8th and 7th, or "Across from Cowboys Mac's" (formerly known as Hooker Mac's) on 4th and 5th when the late night slushie addiction needs to be fulfilled.
I think I might have to move out to the suburbs and buy a mini-van. Or else wean myself off of the latenight convenience store visits.

Cowboys is run by a bunch of drugged-up, racist, roid monkeys and barbie dolls who find it completely acceptable to spit on their patrons with bad service, high prices, and discriminatory rules.
The sad part is, the lemmings just keep lining up to get shot and somehow this pseudo-brothel stays in business.

Is that the short grey-haired guy? I may not see him if he's out during the day, I'm usually only there at night, after the the hole-in-the-wall store downstairs closes.
I usually see three or four selections from the following list when I do go:
- smoking teenager(s) with skateboard and black t-shirt
- "wanna-buy-dope" guy with baseball cap
- "wanna-buy-crack" punk with baseball cap
- "wanna-buy-acid" ######bag with sunglasses AND baseball cap
- bum that holds the door open and asks for change
- loud rap music guy in stupid-looking accessorized car, along with vapid slutty girlfriend
- Teen Girl Squad!
- creepy 30 year old loser watching Teen Girl Squad!
- wanna-be-gangster and his wanna-be posse
- drunk and clueless guy that is around 6 months/1 year from becoming holding-open-door-bum
- nervous tourist from hotel across the street
- random thug taking break from mugging job
- fat girl on cell phone with annoying laugh
