"MacKenzie... we've talked a lot over the year about the leadership that he's brought to the table this year for us, and I think he really gets it now," said Flames head coach Ryan Huska, also with Canada on the Worlds stage.
"That's the one thing with MacKenzie. He understands where he's at in his career and he understands the responsibility he bears with our team, and a big part of that is helping bring people along.
"He recognizes the calibre of player Zayne is, and I think he was trying to do everything and anything he can, one, feel comfortable, and two, give him a few tips and suggestions to help him come along."

"Because he's going to be a big part of this hockey team," Weegar said.
"He's obviously a young kid. He's got some things to learn, and I just wanted to be there for him and let him know what our team is like and how our culture is, how our identity is, and how things are kind of done around Calgary. I know he's coming off a big OHL season and stuff like that, but it's a full team in our room. When you come into our dressing room, there are no egos. You're selfless and you play your role.
"He gets it. I know he's going to be an awesome player. I want him to keep his swag and be the type of player he's got to be. I just wanted him just to kind of hear it from me and let him be comfortable. I know how tough it is when you come in at a young age and you're nervous.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Panthers let him go. I'm sure they could have made the Tkachuk trade without him.

I still think Weegar makes the best partner for Parekh. 2 offensive minded players who can both skate, that can take chances and have a high IQ at that end of the ice.

The idea of Weegar and Parekh playing together and having Weegar cover for Parekh's rookie mistakes sounds fantastic. I haven't been more excited to have a rookie in the system since Gaudreau.
I'm imaging finally having 2 defencemen who can move the puck around the perimeter consistently without putting themselves out of position.

You have Bahl and Weegar on the left. Parekh and Brzustewicz on the right. Pick the best set and watch them grow for years. I'm personally partial to...
Bahl - Parekh
Weegar - Brzustewicz

Gould and Pike were talking very highly about Morin yesterday as well. They floated out the idea of Morin - Brz as a perfect complimentary pair
Bahl Parekh
Weegar Mews
Morin Brz

I just think Weegars game is finished he knows who he is and what he can do. Plus he’s mobile and has great offensive instincts which will help him and Parekh switch and cover for each other. Guys that can get down in the dots and slot and create chaos for the coverage.
I just go back his goal and that’s just not a play vets make. It’s like a basketball play when someone kicks out and rolls to the basket.
With Bahl while his skating isn’t poor I just don’t think he has the aggressive of Weegar to push the pace.

I have always really liked Morin. He really stood out in his first rookie camp here too. Hopefully he looks great at camp this year.

Morin needs to work on his foot speed and skating in general to compliment anyone at the next level.

I doubt it. You’ve gotta give to get.
However, I will say that Weegar was a bit of a scapegoat in the playoffs. He had a couple of key turnovers that led to goals against and I think the team gave up on him. He’s matured a lot in Calgary as the go to defender. Before he would always defer to Ekblad, and sometimes even Forsling. He’s a much more solid player mentally now than he was back then.

The Panthers have said they turned things around by moving out players who didn’t fit how they wanted to play, and bringing in those who did. Huberdeau and Weegar are presumably the former. When the Tkachuk trade was being analyzed, a rival executive was quoted in the Athletic saying the Panthers were smart to move out two guys who were not hard to play against. But as Cali says, it looks like Weegar has changed his approach.

Honestly, Huberdeau has changed his game as well. Both are much tougher to play against now, then they were in Florida.

The panthers had already turned things around before the tkachuk trade. they won the presidents trophy with Huberdeau and weegar. tkachuk inproved tuem but their biggest moves were more subtle - adding guys like Forsling and Bennett

Three Cup finals in a row, I don't think they're losing any sleep over the trade.

They didn’t like how the team played in the playoffs. After being bounced by the Lightning they wanted to build a roster that was harder to play against in the playoffs. Zito has spelled this out in interviews. He doesn’t name Huberdeau and Weegar, but it’s not hard to read between the lines.
