Default 2025 WHL Entry Draft

No one probably gives a hoot about this but I following this closer than NHL.
But in the off chance someone else does care to yap about it. A lot of academy “outlaw” league kind picked and will be. Very interesting.

Following along close this year as a few of my sons friends and former teammates (and opponents) are ranked and could get picked tomorrow.

Yes Luke is Rhetts kid we played with them a year. Gigantically tall early. He wore his dads old NHL skates at 12. He was not very good a few years ago, skated like a new born giraffe and played very timid but seems to have turned a corner and has gotten a mean streak.

He was not drafted last year when first had eligibility so why would they just not sign him. Ahhh. He played buffalo last year and was not eligible then but SAHA this year so now eleigible.

Not sanctioned by Hockey Canada. People fed up with Hockey Canada silly rules/tiering and started their own leagues. JPHL, HSL. A little more intense amount of ice time as well. Hockey Canada threatened if you play for them you will never play for them. Turned out to be horsecrap, Dupont played HSL.

At least half the kids I see drafted from Alberta played them, so they are a real threat. Rhett himself coached a couple of the teams.

It is getting quite watered down though. It used to be more exclusive and invite driven. Now anybody clashing with their Association is starting a team and charging big money. A lot of pay to play AA stuff going on. Mid tier kids going that route and not having great experiences

The high end of HSL is better than anything a local MHA can do though.

Also they introduce a hybrid hitting year a year prior to Hockey Calgary where the players are gradually introduced to it vs the U15 bloodbath that starts in the first year.

Sure are lot of Chases, Chaces, and Chayses coming up the ranks these days. Must be the Paw Patrol generations time to shine. Few Connors than usual too.

The kid the Tigers took in the 2nd round Luke Warrener, is that Rhetts son?

I always wondered why so many teams end of passing on their remaining picks. Is it because they have already reached a limit for how many players they can rights to? Or is it because they would be obligated to find somewhere for them to play and just don't have the room? Or is there just literally no player they see with potential at that point?

I'm use to thinking about it in the NHL context where you might as well just throw a dart and hope for the best.

At that point if you want them, just sign them. Also, getting drafted that late sucks because now you are locked to one team. Especially bad if its a team with Prince in the name.

Draft is about wanting a player enough so you limit their rights and bargaining power.

Posted in the other WHL forum, so cross posted.

So when the Pats come out to play, you guys have to go, as Maddox Schultz is the real deal. He is unreal. 14/15 years old and dominated midget AAA. I was lucky to get to watch him for cheap while he played with the Pat C's... Now I gotta spend some more to watch him with the Pats.

He won't be playing the whole season though as he didn't apply for exceptional status, so he only gets something like 35 games w the Pats. The year after though, full time.

If he continues this trajectory, easily a top 3-5 pick in NHL in 4 years.

Dupont is special, so you can't pass on him. Makes me curious if other medium-to-high profile players were ever passed over because of this.
