The third new way to play with the Wii is the Balance Board. It looks like a scale or aerobics step, and it will ship with a new game to be called Wii Fit. The board is pressure sensitive so it can measure shifts in weight and calculate players' body mass index (Wii Fit called poor Reggie "overweight" as he demonstrated it onstage). The stats will track players' progress in Fit, and the board will be used in exercises ranging from yoga to heading soccer balls.
I wonder if this is actually going to be a good get fit device or if it's going to be another Playstation "I-toy aerobics" type debacle. The idea of being able to have an interactive scale that enables you to track the progress of either "offline" work-out routines or even some wii routines seems like a great idea to me though.

A little bit more info and some screens and movies. Very interesting concept. It's things like this that has the Wii spanking the X360 and PS3 on a world-wide scale and in every territory individually also.

If this goes well it will be another multi-multi-million seller like Nintendogs or Brain Training. Very interesting to keep an eye on this.

My sister-in-law and I had a discussion about this saying that the Wii is a workout already, they should have some sort of yoga program. I think it'll be a hit.

The eye-toy games are pretty fun, I wonder why it never really caught on? I actually found the eye-toy more innovating than the wii.

I'm totally picking one up the balance board. The zapper looks pretty crappy though. Just awkward looking.

I thought they already had a wheel peripheral though...or is that a 3rd party accessory?

Edit: The peripheral for Guitar Heroes III also looks pretty sick. I'm sooo excited for that!!

The WII has outsold the 360 and PS3 since its release.

Remember though, its half the price and it targets a completely different demographic, one that isnt likely the purchase alot of games but rather play a certain number of games very frequently.

At the M$ E3 press conference they said this year alone that the 360 has sold in dollar value more consoles, accessories, games than the WII and PS3 combined.

Does anyone know what else the Nintendo corp does, supposedly their market cap surpassed Sony's yesterday in trading on the Nikie' (sp?) stocke exchange.

However they do also plan on releasing 'gamer' games as well. They're getting everyone else hooked for now, and then they'll take over the rest. Bwahahahahahahaha! Nintendo's evil plot to take over the world....

The gamer games wont work on the WII due to the different demos for those players, high def, high graphics etc.

A game like Gears of War or Assasins Creed could never get released on the Wii.

I own a 360 and a Wii and I love the Wii cause I have been able to get to girlfriends to play on it, you really get a blow to the ole ego when a girl gets a lucky punch in on Wii boxing and then gloats about it.

I don't buy that at all. I'm as "hardcore" as anyone along with plenty of people I know. We all have every bit as much fun with Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Mario Kart, F-Zero etc as we do with Halo, Gears of War, Resistance and Forza. Some of the most "hardcore" gamers I know own a Wii, PC and maybe a few of the last gen machines. There are just as many "harcore" Wii gamers out there as there are "hardcore" X360 players.

I think if anything, the last couple years in the gaming world has shown that the large majority of people buying video games don't care nearly as much about HD graphics as MS and Sony thought they did. As for MS claimimg that the pure $ figure of their products were higher than Sony and Nintendo combined, well, I don't buy that either. Not on a world-wide scale anyway. Maybe NA alone and that is just because the 360 is far more expensive than Wii but I still can't see that.

May NA sales looked something like this (As per NPD).

DS - 423 000
Wii - 338,000
PSP - 221 000
360 - 154 000
PS3 - 81 000

Software sales are pretty close between Wii and X360. X360 games cost on average $10 more. Based on that. Does that claim sound right to you? Maybe.

Japan is even worse. They do it by the week , not month. The most recent week looks like this. (7/2 - 7/9)

DS - 140 000
Wii - 75 000
PSP - 33 000
PS3 - 13 000
360 - 2 300 (being generous and not rounding down)

Europe is next to impossible to find numbers for but it is generally accepted that Wii vs. X360 is slightly more lopsided for Wii than it is in NA. Sony is lagging far behind there as well.

That MS statement sounds like pure BS to me.

As for Nintendo market capitalization, I also heard they passed Sony to become the #1 consumer electronics company in the world. The only thing they do other than games is dip their hands into the Pokemon movies. That's it. Judging by the sales numbers though it is easy to see that Nintendo is giving Sony a beat-down world wide right now and they make money on every console sold, DS or Wii. Sony loses their shirts on the PS3 and breaks about even on the PSP. If PS3 sales don't increase, say, 500% pretty quickly Sony is going to be losing billions on the Playstation brand. Ken Katuragi, the "father of Playstation" has already been fired from Sony due to the PS3's absolute face-flop on the world-wide market.

That all being said, I can't wait for Mass Effect (too bad it's made in Edmonton).

Great post. I own a PC and a Wii and I really get the best gaming experience out there.

It's funny - it's pretty easy to make an argument that the 360 isn't a very hardcore system. The entire console revolves around FPS's and any gamer should know that PC FPS kick the crap out of console FPS simply based on controls (not to mention mods, better graphics, free online, etc.). I don't see why hardcore gamers would flock to a system where almost every good game (based on IGN's ratings) is either a PC port or will be ported to the PC within 6-9 months when they have to give up better controls and modability.

I find it really funny that basically all of Nintendo's classic franchises are now being labelled as casual games. Hardcore games aren't the same generic FPS that every 16 year old loves because it features buckets of blood and tons of swearing, but ones that have something that is now less important than graphics in a lot of company's eyes - gameplay.

It's also false in the fact that M$ is now recording a larger loss per 360 unit sold than the PS3 due to the failure rate of the 360 (estimated at a staggering 33%). Also, they are now extending the warranty of ALL 360s to 3-years and offering free shipping to all returned units, and are even offering to rebate those who have paid for shipping previously. This is apparently going to cost M$ over $1 billion. Looks like I'm gonna have to go after a PS3 now (after another price drop heh).

That actually makes me like Microsoft more. They're willing to acknowledge that they're manufacturing crap that breaks a lot and they're taking the responsibility upon themselves to correct it. After dealing with cell phone manufacturers, that speaks volumes in my eyes. Of course, they could always be more like the Wii which never breaks. Anyone have a broken Wii here? I remeber the story about a kid tripping on a corded controller and Nintendo fixing it anyways... I'm sure that was from here. Their repair department must be bored if they're taking back things like that.

I still think a quality check should have been done before launch or at least after the first shipments.

All new shipments are supposedly going to be significantly more reliable, but can they really improve to an acceptable industry standard. I think I heard somewhere that industry standard is about 3%. And compare that to the 1% failure rate reported by Nintendo and Sony. Can M$ fix the 360 to reduce the failure rate by 30%? I'm doubtful. And that speaks volumes about 360s currently in the stores. So no thanks here! Not yet anyway! I'd consider waiting longer to see if the new shipments really improve that much or not. Or maybe by then the PS3 will be a more viable console anyway heh.

Even then.... I will probably wait for the PS3 to settle out. I'm thinking by Christmas they will actually have some decent titles, and there's whispers going around saying that there will be yet another PS3 price drop by Christmas.

That or I stick with just the Wii! With the new balance board, imagine a snowboarding/skiing game! Or like if you could use the balance board as pedals along with a steering wheel for driving games! Or use it with the zapper for a Time Crisis-like game! That could keep me entertained for an indefinite amount of time!
