Are the Flames even eligible for the lottery? If the 16th pick wins the lottery, does it revert to the Flames?

Yes and yes. The pick is technically still ours until the draft lottery is over, then it either goes to Montreal or we lucked out and have the 6th OA pick

Flames get 6, Montreal gets 32. This is the way!

Calgary drafting both would be the dream scenario for me barring a lottery win. The internal competition we'd see for the next few years would be great as they jockey to make it to the NHL.

IF the flames do win the lottery, and IF it's impossible to further trade up and snag Misa, who would everyone pick?
To me it would be between O'Brien and Desnoyers. I used to be all aboard on McQueen but the injury history is getting to be too heavy.

Throw Frondell in there too, though decent chance he's also gone before pick #6

Yeah, sorry, I was considering Frondell in top 5 still, but there's a reasonable chance Desnoyers could potentially be taken in front of him. Boston in particular may like this model of player lol.

Schaefer Misa and Martone seem to be gaurantees to go top 5. I suspect Hagens too.
So let's say between Desnoyers, Frondell, O'Brien, and McQueen. Or another if someone wants to champion.

Frondell for me but I agree he could go in the top 5 or even top 3 (ahead of Hagens and Martone).

I could get behind Frondell, but I also really like O'brien. RHS, 6'2, fairly young in the class.

Don't we just have to pick top 10 for the pick to stay with us? Yes, winning the lottery means we pick 6th but we can also pick at 7/8/9/10 and still retain the pick. Obviously, if Flames move up that much we want it to be 6th pick but there is actually a lot of flexibility with our placement as any placement 1-10 is gravy.

I thought the only way we can win is moving up 10, not sure we move up 9 if we get the second berth? If that's what you mean FleeceGang

Draft Pick
|
Not necessarily. Moving up 10 spots is the maximum allowed under the new lottery rules, so if we hit it big and place anywhere between picks 1 and 6 in the lottery we pick 6 regardless. But we can also be awarded the 7/8/9/10 pick and still retain the pick. It's not necessarily feast or famine (6 or 16) as it seems to be implied on here sometimes. I may have the details wrong myself but as far as I understand it as long as our card doesn't come up in the first 6 of the lottery we are happy!

We can't be awarded pick 7/8/9/10, no.
The way it works now is that they only draw lottery balls for pick #1 and pick #2 and no other picks. They say "teams can only move up a maximum of 10 spots" because the number 11 team could theoretically win the lottery for the 2nd overall pick and move up 9 spots, and obviously all the teams within the top 10 will move up less than 10 spots regardless of what pick they win.
So if we win the lottery for either pick #1 or pick #2, we move up 10 picks regardless. So for us, it's either win one of the two draws and get pick #6 or lose our pick to Montreal. Same goes for any team seeded #12 or later. They will move up 10 picks if they win. No options in-between, unfortunately.

Who would you guys take at #6?
Assuming misa, schaeffer, Martin and Hagens are gone.
For me it's probably
1. Frondell
2. Desnoyers
3. O'Brien
4. McQueen

That is a good list. McQueen was definitely ranked higher at the start of the season but the injuries have caused him to slip. A bunch of lists put Desnoyers above Frondell but I think if you have either of them as the Flames selection then that is a good day.
I assume you meant Martone instead of Martin for the list of who is off of the board.
