It will be interesting to see if this turns out like Darryl Sutter’s extension in Calgary – or Mike Babcock’s famous coaching stint in Columbus. It’s still possible Drury could be fired before the Rangers’ next game in October.

Those are coaches who got fired.
The only GM I can think of who didn’t get a game was Neil smith I believe.

Imagine thinking you have great lottery luck to get #1 overall and #2 overall and it backfires with Lafreniere and Kakko underperforming massively lol

I believe you're right… which at any rate shows it can happen.
New contract or no new contract, I think Drury's managerial career has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. The Rangers can easily afford to pay him to do nothing, and it will be cheaper than paying him to wreck the team.

It was a while ago now, but my memory seems to remember that Drury was one of the first notable cases of trying to bury a contract in the AHL under the post lockout CBA. Didn't he refuse to play in the AHL or something?

, "Knowing that I'll be working in the same office where one of my mentors, Bill Torrey, created a dynasty is an unbelievable feeling. Al Arbour, whom I owe everything to, gave me my first hockey job as an advance scout. I wear my Islanders Stanley Cup ring with immense pride. To be able to come full circle and return home to the Islanders is a dream."
Hired June 8 2006 and fired July 18th 2006. Full circle indeed. Replaced by Garth Snow.
The Islanders have had some funnies. The Spano thing making fake payments to buy the team and saying he forgot some zeros. The Diepetro contract. This debacle here. Playing in Brooklyn with a giant car in the stands.

Not often a GM gets an extension at the heels of a disastrous season where the team went from a cup contender to a non-playoff team ripe with infighting, dissention, coach firings, etc. It's why I always point to ownership in most cases being the biggest obstacle to winning for most organizations.

To be fair, its not like the Rangers can't afford to fire him on day one of this contract if they want to.

Fox has elite vision, a great first pass, and he can run a powerplay. But he’s not a great skater, not good defensively, not physical, and he wilts under pressure. He did not look very good at the 4 Nations.
He’s a top 20 d-man in the league. But he’s not a top 5, regardless of what the Norris nominations and advanced stats say.

Those of us old enough to remember Drury not wanting to be in Calgary dislike him for that. But in fairness, he has a solid reputation among NHL’ers for his professionalism, work ethics and integrity. I remember reading a long feature article in Sports Illustrated about him like 20 years or so ago, and by all witness’ accounts of those interviewed, he was pure class in the locker room and on ice. FWIW…

And you can't blame him for not wanting to be in Calgary- especially from which franchise he came from, lets be honest. And the not wanting to be here has not exactly changed as we saw the last few years.

One of the concerns with dmen like Fox is their stats require that they get paid as a #1 dman, but can you win with a guy like that? So far - no.
So you are allocating a good amount of your cap to him, because the stats require it, but it may actually hinder your ability to win.
Montreal with face the same thing when eventually Hutson needs to be paid.
