Default GM Meetings

Disappointed that the GM's have no plans to change the playoff format and revert to the old way.

I think the playoff format is fine,

What I want to see is an over and back rule for the red line in 3-3 OT.

Once they watch one of Dallas and Colorado go out in the first round this year they'll be pressured next year to change it.

Is there a summary of what was discussed at the meetings?

I personally don't care for expanding the playoff format. I get why it might make financial sense, but adding more bubble teams to the post season isn't exciting.

The networks have a big say in how they want the playoff format.

Does anyone have an idea what the proposed format changes would be other than reverting back to the old way? I'd think they'd want more teams playing in playoffs at this point, maybe an NBA style play-in round?

I don't like a play-in round to be honest unless it's just to eliminate tiebreakers. I don't want a play in every year, but I also hate tie breakers. So I think if two teams are tied for the final playoff spot, then a one game play off should be the tiebreaker. Not regulation wins or some other abstract difference. Make them play for it.

Divison leaders getting the 1 and 2 seeds and then the rest of the seeds getting 3-8 is what has been discussed for it to be more fair.

But I don't think the league and broadcast partners care about "fairness" in the playoffs. They want the most intriguing matchups.

And TBH the 2 vs 3 in division seeds generally do give you more intriguing rivalry matchups earlier in the playoffs, even if it means a team gets a tougher matchup than maybe they deserve.

And this year it's not really a huge difference.

In the East it would still be Leafs-Tampa in round 1 and Carolina vs New Jersey in this structure or more of a 1-8 structure.

In the West it would be Edmonton-Colorado and Dallas-LA instead of Edmonton-LA and Colorado - Dallas.

But LA and Colorado have been flip flopping enough it might end up the same way anyways.

Honestly in the end it's generally not a huge deal.

I really want OT tweaked. Let's get rid of the shootout.

No way IMO, NFL and MLB have less teams than the NHL so i think NHL is perfect on the amounts, i say this because in the NBA- 2 29-40 teams have a shot to make the playoffs.. they should lose but a fluke win vs a injured team could have a 29-40 team in the playoffs. Reminds me of the 80s NHL and NBA but at that time, there were not enough teams to no choice but to have weak teams in the playoffs

Nothing will change until Bettman who is beyond his expiration date is punted to the curb. Unfortunately if Daly takes over I don't see any change coming which is too bad because Bettman has introduced a lot to the game that is not good.

I originally was in favor of a 10 min OT with the hopes it would never go to a shootout. Then I had a flashback to the Van CGY OT game and I think I would have jumped from the press level if I had to watch a full 10 mins of that.
