No different than when the Oilers basically ruled out Mike Smith in the middle of summer for the entire following season when he didn't even have major surgery or anything. LTIR is a sham.

Ask the owner of the Panthers if they are happy Matt got hurt in a meaningless fight in a non-league game.

He will probably be overjoyed if he can stash him on LTIR until game 1 of the playoffs and add a key piece or two at the deadline to play the circumvention game all the cool teams are playing now.

Matthew Tkachuk is a fantastic brand rep for hockey. Like him or not, he's good for the sport.
|
And injuring himself doing so instead of being available to play meaningful regular season homestretch games and playoff games is the most Tkachuk thing that ever Tkachukd. It would be downright hilarious if it wasn't so stupidly predictable.
Maybe one day he'll play the game with an ounce of maturity and self-awareness. Probably not.

Any indication the fight was how Tkachuk injured his groin?

I thought the injury happened in the second period, but I could be wrong.

It's a tough situation. At least they won the cup last year.
My kids had group golf lessons last night and the Flames game was on in the background. One of the instructors asked a kid if he liked hockey and if his favorite team was the Flames. The 7 year old kid said his favorite team was Canada.
International play goes very far for the sport, and unfortunately it has its risks. The Panthers are the only ones who came out on the wrong end of this one. The rest of the hockey world improved immensely, and the more popular the sport gets, the more all the players make overall.

I thought so too. But people have said Tkachuk was injured in the fight so often I thought maybe there as an actual confirmation that was the case. Seems like it’s just baseless speculation.

Vegas lost Shea Theodore. Bruins lost McAvoy.
It's understandable why the league didn't want to participate in the Olympics.

It looks like they're already doing it. They'd be a couple million over the cap with the Jones trade if Tkachuk wasn't on IR. They now have another $8.5m to pay for a high end rental player.

Florida is like Vegas now; do they have anything of significance left to trade.

Definitely Kane; Hawks put him on LTIR, traded for Vermette and Timonen at the deadline, and Kane was magically ready to go for Game 1 of the playoffs.

Tkachuk has played over 200 games in last two seasons. I don't think the Panthers are bothered much at all, this helps them more than hurts.

Imagine for a moment that tkachuk is banged up a bit; why wouldn’t he be like everyone else. Maybe he hurt his hand, groin, whatever. And now gets a few weeks off prior to the playoffs.
Imagine that you are the panthers and could really use the cap space.
Seems plausible!
