It is almost like the Roman Turek contract. "Hey, he's doing good for us, let's give him the world."

Turek got $2.8 million at a time when the payroll for the Flames' entire roster was under $27 million. Giving a goalie less than 5% of next season's salary cap is hardly giving him the world.

They locked in Turek at a cost they couldn't afford to pay him and renegotiated his contract when they realized he wasn't the #1 goalie and they had someone better.

Well, they can't renegotiate contracts anymore, the Canucks can afford to pay 5% of cap to a goalie, and they don't have someone better unless Demko gets over his injuries and returns to form. So the comparison is good, except for… um… everything.

My point is, they signed him based on short term success, just like we saw the Flames do with Turek.

Sorry I don't meet any of your standards. Thanks for pointing out my stupidity.

It’s a fair contract. His career SV% of .905 is better than average and he’s been pretty consistent.

Meh. This is the new price for backup goalies who can play 30+ games. Starter money likely starts at $9-10 million now.

That I agree with. I just don't think it's anywhere near as potentially damaging as the Turek contract was.

I do apologize for making it seem that I was accusing you of stupidity. That was never my intention. You're a very good and intelligent poster going all the way back to Usenet days.

I just don't think the Turek comparison is a good fit for what's happening with Lankinen. Please don't take it personally.

Thank you for your response. Sorry for my reaction. I'm having a bad week and I let things get the better of me. Normally I'm cool as a cucumber but sometimes I slip.

His .893 career save % suggests otherwise.

Since he became a Flame and among all G's league wide who have played 90 or more games during that span:

54 of 55 in save%

40 of 55 in GAA

Dreadful.

The thing is, he would be competing for a job against one of the numerous goalies who haven't played 90 games in that span. The worst goalies in the league don't stay in the league long enough to show up in those particular numbers.

I actually think this isn’t terrible. Maybe a year or two longer than you would like but that’s how it goes. However I don’t see how this makes Vancouver better. The team is pretty messy and this doesn’t fix any of it.
