Another one to add...

'Resign' when they really mean 're-sign'.

Big difference here... the first means "quit". The second means to actually sign another deal.

"We should of signed Brad Stuart".

Just plain butchery.

As for "could care less" : that one bugs me a lot but it is crazy how many people say it. You can catch it being said on tv all the time.

I think it's a rule that you have to make a grammatical or spelling mistake in any post that corrects anothers grammar or spelling..

I'm bad for homonyms (their, they're, there, etc). It comes down to how your brain works. Do you think/type in words/letters or do you think/types in sounds and strings of letters? If you think in sounds homonyms kill you.

A defenceman plays defense.

No different than practice is the noun, practise is the verb.
So then a team practises at a practice.

I have the benefit of having an English teacher for a mother. I know the difference between them all very well. Lucky me :P

There is no excuse for screwing up "they're" though, at least not in my mind. It's a contraction. If you can replace the word you're using with they are, then you should use they're.

What really gets me is how the fata you use colon's and semi colons. I've got them sort of figured out, but I'll be damned if I don't screw it up nine times out of ten.

Oh, and I just thought of another thing. It's not 80's or 90's. It's 80s and 90s.

I found this fact in reading many posts here, that the majority of the members wrote their posts in a excellent English. It is a lot better
than other forums I have read before....
That's because we spend so much time correcting each others grammar.

What should be more important is to communicate effectively. Don't focus on making it look smart by using a Thesaurus. Sometimes simple is best.

I have a question though.. The President.. are you actually pressing "Enter" to make your own new lines or something? If so, why are you doing that?

"colon's" should be plural in this sentence, so it should read "colons"

Although, I'm not sure about the 80s/90s thing. I like 80's music. It's possessive, as in, belonging to a decade, no?

In my technical writing class there was a presentation on it. 80s would be a shorter version of 1980s and it was definitely 1980s that was the rule with numbers.

http://www.grammarbook.com/numbers/numbers.asp

hahahaha... I did it right for semi colons, but not colons!

Ah but I'll do even worse ones than that. For instance I'll mis-use "are" instead of "our" or vice verca because the sounds are the same. There's other even stranger examples but I can't recall any right now. But its not a case of not knowing the different meanings of each word - its a disconnect between the thought in your head and what one's fingers type.

I'm not doing a very good job of explaining it.
