The talk of trading with Buffalo and players with them on no trade lists is supported in this article about a player poll.
If you have a no-trade list, what’s the first team on it?
Winnipeg Jets - 48.78%
Buffalo Sabres - 19.51%
San Jose Sharks - 8.54%
Calgary Flames - 3.66%
Ottawa Senators - 3.66%

San Jose? That is very weird to me.

I'd be happy if they went with 3 young #2 centers and Backlund or Kadri to anchor them until one of them elevated their play enough to supplant them.
Flames have the goalie, the defense pipeline is brimming with talent, they have capable wingers in every spot of the organizational depth chart. They just have a development gap at center. They have 4 NHL centers, a small group of career AHLers flirting with a bottom 6 role(Bishop, Hunt, Rooney, Kirkland), one young center breaking through slowly in Kerins and then there's a 3 year gap to Misa, and long shots Hoskins and Hunter Laing.
They need to draft in 25 positionally, since it's not a deep draft it's the time to swing on some positional need if they not drafting in the lottery. Or dealing one of their excess 1sts to trade for a young RHS C.
I've turned my gaze away from Cozens after the Sabers reported asking price and am now looking at Zegras. Worth taking a flyer on IMO.

Just powered through the whole thread. Do people actually think we’d trade Zary for Cousins (wouldn’t even do that for Cozens) or are people using voice to text?

The impression I got is that people are talking about how ridiculous it is since Cozens isn't as good as Zary even without the insane boat anchor. Friggin hope so at least.

I think Zary would have to be a part of this for a realistic deal to be made between Buff and Cgy for Cozens.
Same age but Cozens has much bigger sample size in the NHL. Zary has shown he may hit similar ppg potential and right now would be a price discount but probably not for long. Cozens is a C , Zary is still being tried there. Zary is becoming a fan favourite here but objectively Cozens still has to be viewed as a superior player. If Buffalo is asking for Zary surely they are asking for more to balance the trade.

Most players with NTC are on the back half of their career and don't want to finish it with a team that's scorched earth rebuilding.

Disagree.
If their window was now, and they needed one more piece to get over the top, then pay whatever it takes.
But the Flames have time - lots of time. They are in asset management mode, not win now mode, so overpaying for a player that isn't a perfect solution is just poor asset management. If you can acquire them at a good price, great - you've improved on your asset total. But overpaying defeats the purpose.

Zary is also miles better defensively, which isn't saying much.

I wouldn't say pay whatever it takes, but I would consider that 23 year old Centers with top 6 potential don't come on the market very often.

Spittin chiclets talked about how lots of guys have LA, SJ and ANA on their no trade lists due to very high taxes as well as cost of living. This goes back over a year or 2 ago.

Feels lateral to me. I think they should just move on. Unless they would take Honzek and something else. I really think you need Zary to slot in as the 2c optimally and move Kadri (not for Cozens just move him in general).

Hypothetically, if Wright for Parekh was on the table, would it be worth considering? We seem to have a lot of prospects at D so it would be dealing from a position of strength to address a long-term position of weakness within the org.

And a lot of it also has to do with how competitive the teams are right now. If San Jose was a Cup contender, they probably wouldn't be as high on the list.
Before the Oilers opened their competitive window, they were always at or near the top of these lists.
The sad thing is how badly Winnipeg is viewed, that it doesn't even matter that they have a top team in the league right now.

Khadri is more of a #2C than a #1C, and I wouldn’t count on that lasting more than another year or so. He’s old and he plays hard.
I wouldn’t count on Backlund being in the NHL beyond next year. My favourite Flame, but he’s already hit the wall, and is fading FAST.
Our C depth chart looks weak-to-middling right now. We’ve got probably one year before it becomes absolute bottom-tier.
Connie knows this though. He’ll hook us up.
If there’s anybody who deeply understands the reality of a pretty good centre trying to play as a #1C, it’s Conroy.

If anyone is untouchable its probably that guy. I would be dangling from our pile of lw prospects.

Multiple media are saying he's playing injured.

This just isn't remotely true. People act like Backlund is playing like Kevin Rooney.
Backlund is still a good NHL center that is driving play, his production has just dipped a bit.
He's just being asked to do way too much on this Flames roster - he needs to be slotted more as a bottom 6 center instead of being a top 6 center tasked with doing all the heavy lifting right now.
