While Necas is a downgrade they did get a 3rd line C that can win faceoffs they have cap space and picks to get more pieces.
Colorado was deep deep team when they won. They know what it takes and having 3 players produce won’t get it done. They also know they needed a goalie and went and got one.
While it stings to lose a player like this, Colorado wants to win cups not produce the most 100 point players.

You can tell how badly one side lost a trade based on the amount of explaining they have to do afterwards.

No the 'Hawks only get a 3rd, however, as that 3rd was, originally, their own, it is as if it is the last pick in the 2nd round.
Either way, it is depressing that my team has taken over the place of the late, Coyotes, as the graveyard of cap burials.

For the 'Lanche, there is a name that I haven't seen in this discussion, that may be the reason for the move, in the 1st place. This clears space for Landeskog to be activated off of LTIR. After years of rehab, they may feel that their former captain deserves a chance. Taking a flyer on an asset you have had in the margins of the roster, is a, relatively, safe, gamble. It seems that they were unlikely to re-sign Raantanen for a price they could fit in anyways.

What’s the best example of a quality for quantity trade that worked out for the quantity team?
Depth is important in the playoffs no doubt, but Rantanen can steal a game on his own. Just don’t like this for the Avs at all - think the probability of another cup in the next few years goes down with this move.

This trade lengthens their lineup a bit. When they get Nichuskin back, they'll be looking good again. If they get Landeskog back, they are deep.
Drouin - MacKinnon - Necas
Landeskog - Mittelstadt - Nichuskin
Lehkonen - Drury - Parssinen
Kiviranta - Colton - O'Connor
Wood, Kelly, Ritchie
And that Makar dude.

They talked to Rantanen after practice and he said he was willing to take a significant discount in Colorado from market value and they had talks for a few days and then traded him.

Do they still have MacKinnon and Makar...then the answer might be yes.
Especially if Blackwood keeps up his .922 he has with the Avs

Feels like we've been waiting for Nichuskin and Landeskog forever.
When people talk about Gabe slotting into games down the stretch it sounds like fantasy to me.
I'd welcome them coming back and having an impact though. Perfect candidate to line up the oilers in round one and send them packing.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Colorado is still a contender (how underrated is Lehkonen BTW) but I can't see how some would say they're a better team now after this deal, if thats being suggested.
Necas in, Rantanen out.
Drury in.
Not Phaneuf for Stajan and spare parts, but still a head scratcher.

I think Friedman made good points about this. Makar is going to have a hefty price tag. Mackinnon already does. Can you win with 3 guys making big coin. The Avs already are short on depth, they maybe decided they couldn't.
The challenge with Necas though is they only get 1 more year of him. He has been very clear that he's going to go to UFA.

A year and a half playing with McKinnon may change his mind.

Watching the 2 games he seems to fit Colorado to a T. Ability to transport the puck and enter and exit zones with speed and setting up for one timer.
Maybe this is what he was looking for is playing with guys he can gun with.

It's not 100% Landeskog will come back this season. He's been in some morning skates but the Avs continue to say there's no timeline. Maybe they are being coy because of they need the money freed up from having him on the LTIR and he will be magically good to go in the playoffs? Who knows.

He is about to miss his 3rd straight season getting surgery no one has returned from. Even if he had a miraculous recovery and came back what impact if any would he have.
Don't think Colorado is playing any games here.

I think Colorado is banking that a big part of Rantanen >> Necas was actually that Mackinnon was carrying.
And that Mackinnon + Necas is pretty close to Mackinnon + Rantanen.

Yes but Rantanen's definition of 'significant discount' and Colorado's were/are probably very different. If you think you're worth $14M, then being willing to go to $13M is a significant discount.
Apparently COL offered him something around $11.75M which would make him the highest paid winger in the NHL (not counting Draisaitl), and he turned that down. There is no way COL is paying him more than MacKinnon.

The player is obviously going to throw the team under the bus because he didn't get what he wanted, and the team will protect themselves as well. Him saying significant could mean anything, it just riles the fans up. OMG he was willing to take a pay cut, and you traded him!! What if the pay cut like you said was $1M a year. It's really not a pay cut either, it was going to be a 3-5 million raise per season.
This negotiation and the Stamkos one as well kind of tell you that it is going to be difficult to get anyone to buy into a discount. Not even Leon took a penny less.
