Rantanen is called the moose. Necas isn't called anything.

Could see it going any which way. You can't predict chemistry though. Risky for the Avs coming from a duo that was a sure thing offensively.

We'll find out how much could be attributed to MacKinnon based on whether those two guy rise or fall after their move.

I still remember the days when posters here were falling over themselves to give Taylor Hall a max term contract. Hit 40 points once in the last 9 years.

this will be an unpopular take (and not fit the rebuild/retool timeline) but i would be ecstatic if the Flames signed Rantanen as a FA - even for $14M

I don't think this deal says that.

CHI is trading Hall ($6M) and retaining $4.625m, so they are saving $1.375 in cap space.

And getting an early 3rd

How does this make sense for Chicago? A third seems like a trash return

Although I think it’s a smart move by the Avs if they weren’t going to sign Rantanen long term, I do feel they are downgrading overall with this move. Which I’m not a big fan of because I want them to be an another team in the playoffs that can stop the Oilers from coming out of the west. Vancouver at this point is no longer a real threat for that so the biggest threat to the oilers in the West is likely Vegas.

They get money and a draft pick in a season that's going nowhere. Great deal for them.

They've been trying to dump him since Xmas If I recall. Maybe November.

Again it’s worth more to Chicago as it allows an offer sheet.

does retention of Rantanen instead of retaining on Hall suggest the Canes might flip Hall?

Any offer sheets this summer will involve 2026 draft picks.

The cap space doesn't really make a difference for the Blackhawks I imagine.

They are getting their own 3rd round pick back from Carolina which is almost equivalent to a late 2nd. So this is ultimately likely the best outcome they could've received for Hall anyways

Another side note is that since it's their own 3rd round pick, maybe they can use it to submit an offer sheet down the road (though I doubt they would)

Had to do a double take when it comes to Hall still making $6M.

Yes, I hear Future Considerations demanded a trade to Carolina for a retained Hall.

Yeah, I suspect Chicago was only involved in the three way because the 3rd rounder comes from Colorado, so they retained there… but it’s simpler to frame it as them getting a 3rd pick for Hall, retaining $1.375m on Hall’s salary.

That return makes more sense for a Hall with a little retention. The rantanen piece just confuses it.

Edit: oh, right. They’re retaining on rantanen so that they could retain more than 50% of Hall’s salary. Still an okay value.

I don't see how this makes the Avs better. Flames are 5 points back of them with 3 games in hand, I think Colorado is passable in the standings as we head down the stretch.

If Rantanen signs for cheap, this is slam dunk for Carolina. I don't see how he fits their cap structure otherwise. Weird trade.
