Also it would be tempting for him to break Iginla's record of most games played as a Flame. I believe if he plasy all 82 in this contract and add one more year he would reach it.

Backlund's game is starting to fall off pretty dramatically imo this year. I definitely would not entertain another extension.

Yup, ideally I’d prefer to see him elsewhere next year.

No, let him settle into the #4 C role, over the next year or two

How so? It hasn't seemed like it to me but this is only based on me watching the games. I checked and he's on pace to come in at 38 points or so, which is just under his average career points each season. It seems he's still taking on all the hard competition compared to the other lines, which includes the most starts from his own end, I'm guessing. From what I've seen I haven't seen this pretty dramatic drop off this year.

Backland still has a way with mentoring the rookies as well which has been extremely valuable (Mangiapane, Tkachuck, Coronato, probably others…)

Backlund still needs to get Honzek and guys ready. He has a few more years in him.

Yeah. The argument could be made that the flames should be building a new 3rd line next year and have Backlund-Coleman be the core of the 4th line. That would make the 4th line a strength rather than a weakness. Easier said than done of course. If they somehow managed to get Cozens, the path forward at centre would be Kadri-Zary-Cozens-Backlund. As Kadri slows downc he could become the 3rd line centre while Zary and Cozens become the top 2 centres.

Keep Backlund as long as he wants to stay. He isn’t blocking anyone

Why i have been advocating for using some of our wing depth to get a center and nothing could help the team more if you are trying for the playoffs.
We currently have huby, coleman, sharbait locked up long term. 3 of 8 spots. Scoronato is a shoe for a long term contract thats four. Pospisil, is a regular and it looks like Pelts is making a case as at least a good bottom six you get the point we have a pile if wingers.
Detract a winger not much impact, add a center thats anything close to top six huge difference.
Kadri mystery top six Zary Backs is pretty good center depth.

I’d be fine with it, if he’s actually in a 4th line role. Definitely should never see a power play.

Yea, Backlund looks more or less the same as he did last year while playing the same role he always has, and he's the only Flames forward averaging more than 19 mins per game.
If his advanced stats are a little worse, it's probably because of the Flames' swiss cheese back-end of 6/7 defensemen.

Just a quick correction, Backlund is currently on pace for 34 pts this year which would be his lowest PPG in 13 YEARS.

Plenty of veterans up front for that.

Backlund is fine, but I wouldn't be looking to extend him.
His play has fallen off a bit, and he's getting old. We don't need retirement contracts for everyone.

Grain of salt, there aren't a lot of points to go around on this team

I just think next year is time to start transitioning the young guys into bigger roles, so something like this.
Huberdeau Zary Coronato
Sharangovich Kadri ????
Pelletier Kerins! Coleman
Pospisil Backlund Lomberg
Kind of hoping there’s more youth than that though. Whether it’s through trade, or hopefully some surprises in camp next year.

We all know Backlund goes on a heater for about two weeks where he gets like 15 points in ten games. That’s where he gets his point total to around 50 as always.
I wouldn’t worry about him at all.

The Flames are 31st in the league at scoring goals. He's the same as ever; very graceful decline. And accepted a pay cut. No issues with Backlund.

A few weeks back Saravalli actually mentioned that he thinks he might get them a 1st similar to Monahan. Which I think is way too much.
