I mentioned earlier that the flames could be part of a 3-way deal to get Cozens since they do not have the necessary pieces that Buffalo wants.

What about the islanders? Is there any indication they could be ready for a rebuild? If so, could they be an option?

To the Flames: Cozens
To the Sabres: Horvat
To the Islanders: New Jersey’s 2025 1st round pick + Calgary’s 2025 2nd round pick + Posposil

Flames were mostly linked to the should they or shouldn’t they Tij pick. I don’t think most lists had Parekh falling to the Flames.

Like I said, the centre depth in the system looks much better with a prospect like that. Especially now that Zary looks like he’s developing into a legit 2nd line centre. In that scenario, the flames look skilled in centres, wingers and defencemen throughout the prospect/young player cupboards. Obviously, it would be great to keep adding to all of those positions but, in that scenario, there would be a plan forward for the core positions in the future.

The scenario where Catton is drafted instead of Parekh:
#1 centre: Catton
#2 centre: Zary
#1 goalie: Wolf
Top four defensemen: Andersson, Weegar, Mews, Brz, Poirier (hopefully 2 of the young players would work out that way)

The flames current scenario:
#1 centre:
#2 centre: Zary
#1 D: Parekh
#1 goalie: Wolf
Top four defencemen: Andersson, Weegar, Mews, Brz, Poirier, Parekh (hopefully 2 of the young players would work out that way)
Parekh's ceiling is a #1D; whether he makes it is up-in-the-air as is Catton's projection to be a 1C.

I hope the reason Kerins! was sent down is that they needed the spot for retention in a 3-way deal, and that that deal (Miller) is back on.

Barzal has a 22 team no trade list. It's likely Buffalo is on it.

Unfortunately, 3-ways are rare.

But I digress.

I proposed Horvat in the trade but he likely has a NTC as well so your point could stand.

If Buffalo is set on only trading for proven NHL centres in a Cozens trade, they will struggle to make that trade since most of them have trade protection.

It’d have to be for another guy like Dach

Honestly that may also be a reason why they went with the Vegas deal they got Tuch a guy who actually wants to play for Buffalo since he is from the area.

Buffalo will be hard pressed to get anything they want back for Cozen. Players with no trade protection or a package of picks and some B prospects.

I've been trying to reverse that trend, but the wife still says no.

Which is why MAYBE we can dangle Sharangovich because he comes with a long term extension

Maybe. But I think they would prioritize a center as the return if they lose Cozens in the trade.

For Buffalo, it might be as simple as trading with other teams that have young centers they want to move. That might be Zegras or Dach in exchange for Cozens. Not even sure who adds in those scenarios.

I just heard Frank say on 960 that the Flames want to add another third-pairing D, which would be downright inexplicable.

Yea that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, especially with Poirier, Gru, Kuznetzov and Solo all showing reasons for a look while also having 8 D on the main roster. Unless of course Andersson is in fact dealt there is no reason to look at 3rd pairing D at the cost of even a late pick or middling prospect.

Maybe they want to add a defenceman so they can donate Barrie to the Oilers.

And Frank also said this would be a deal in which the Flames eat salary in return for the other team giving the Flames’ futures? Please? Please?!? Please??!!??

NOTE: Frank did not say what I said in my post. I’m just hoping that the Flames do not waste futures but use cap space to get more futures.

What bloated contracts are out there on D that the flames could take on for a contender looking to upgrade/make cap room ahead of the deadline?
