If they sign him does that send the message that they don’t need Vladdy and he better lower his asking price? Do they trade Vladdy? Or does he play 3rd?

I think the only way the Jays are getting Alonso is if they trade Vladdy to the Mets.

Gimme Vientos, Jett Williams and a couple pitching prospects that are close to MLB.
Sign Alonso and man would it be nice to get Sasaki as well.

I would consider Vlad for Vientos 1 for 1. Then sign Alonso with Vlad's money, and you're way better. Vientos has 2 more seasons before he's even eligible for arb. It basically extends the window significantly.
It's 1 year of vlad for 4-5 of vientos.

That would be an awful trade. Vientos is a one tool guy, he brings power and that is about it. He isn’t a good enough defender to stay at 3B, he is moving to 1B in a year or two. Vientos and Alonso doesn’t make you a better team, I would much rather have Vladdy.
Vladdy was a 5.5 WAR player last year
Vientos and Alonso combined for a 5 WAR.
You would be a worse team with those two than with Vladdy.

I agree with all of this, although I think it's fair to note that Vientos and his 2.9 WAR was in like 110 games because he started in the minors. So its probably fair to multiply that by 1.5.
Anyway, vladdy is better than vientos. But is 1 year of Vladdy at 28.5 MM better than 5 years of cost controlled Vientos? I'm not so sure, and I think it's getting close to that being the choice.
Also, that trade moves the compete window out a bit - I don't think the Jays can compete this year at this point. Maybe if they got all of Santander/Bregman/Sasaki? But Vientos will have significant positive value in 2-3 years whereas letting Vlad walk as an FA gets you nothing after this year.

Is the Alonso interest a smokescreen distraction to knock down Vlad's demands a bit? Or succession planning?
Either way, interesting methodology.

I think there is a lot of gamesmanship going on but I sure hope the Mets are putting a big package together for Vladdy.

Ben Nicholson-Smith says it doesn't make any sense that they would be dangling Guerrero while trying to convince Sasaki to sign. He thinks the Mets are just trying to put pressure on Alonso.

Jays also didn't leverage Vlad's friendship with Soto when they were trying to sign Soto, which also doesn't make sense.
It's not really clear if the Jays are legit interested in signing Vlad or not.

I would just sign Vladdy to what he is looking for, because I think he is a top 10 player in the league. I don’t think Vientos is a player you build around, I think he be a nice add on player to a team that has star offense players already, but he isn’t a player that can carry a lineup.

There's also this. If true it's obvious they're interested but just not willing to throw an open cheque at him. Atleast not yet.

I believe in the Jays.

... the Jays just got more International Signing Pool money from the Guardians.
Edit: I should also mention that they also took on Myles Straw in the deal... which is very on-brand for this era of the Jays.

I don't think they Jays were all that interested in Straw, just that taking on his contract was the price. It looks like Cleveland even threw in some cash so they REALLY wanted to get rid of that contract.

Interesting. The international bonus pool piece.
The Myles Straw add is almost too on brand. Atkins must be trolling us at this point. How many glove first players can one team possibly acquire?

I dunno... getting a good defensive player who can't even hit well in AAA seems like a very Jays move at this moment in time.
In all seriousness. I think this signals that Sasaki has made his choice. The Jays aren't getting that IFA money on a lark... they either need the money to sign him or they know that he's going to California and they're grabbing IFA money to poach some of the guys that team is going to have to break their handshake deals with.

When Sasaki signs with the Dodgers it will hopefully get the ball rolling on other priorities for the Jays.
Like signing players who can hit for power.
