IMO no amount of coaching is going to fix what ails the Red Wings. They don't have the elite talent to be anything but a bubble team for the next few years before sinking back to the bottom.

Was excited by the thread title saying McLennan. Then saw that it's actually McLellan. Disappointed.

Yeah I saw McLennan and was thinking this can't be noodles, is it McLellan? So this is what team number 4 for him?

They play tomorrow so I am assuming he’s at practice today. Would be weird having him clean out his office while the guy replacing him is running practice.

First thing in the morning.

Yeah...McLellan has known about this since at least Tuesday or there would be zero reason for him to even be in Detroit, which he would have to be before the announcement.
Lalonde might even have known since then as well and cleared out Tuesday too. Then the team needs to be informed and staff etc etc.

I guess losing twice to the Habs then getting shut out at home was the breaking point for Yzerman.

Is Steve Yzerman a bad GM or have other factors impacted what he could do?
2010-11 signed with TB as GM - 3rd Round Playoffs, finalist for GM of the year.
 2011-12 - Missed Playoffs
 2012-13 - Missed Playoffs
 2013-14 - 1st round
2014-15 - Lost in Finals - Wins GM of the year.
 2016-17 - Missed Playoffs
 2017-18 - Round 3
 2018-19 - Round 1

Named Detroit GM April 2019. No playoffs in 5 seasons.

People just a bit star struck by his legacy as a player?

I mean it was his roster that won the cup. They added Coleman and Goodrow to push them to get the cup.
He’s been bad in Detroit. Holland left him a mess and he had some bad draft luck but he turned around and did the Holland.

I just looked at the defence and they have Jeff Petry playing regularly. Ben Chariot, Gustafsson. Pretty ugly.

What Yzerman managed to build in Tampa was good. He can take a lot of credit for Tampa.

He has not been able replicate it in Detroit. Ken Holland did him no favours.

Trading Walman was really bad. That division has 3 or 4 contenders and three other teams trying to exit a rebuild. There is no leeway to give away talented players like that with years of control. I agree that coaching won't save them, but a management shakeup might

Yeah, I dont think he's the greatest GM ever or anything, but people do need to remember that when he took over Detroit it was a hot mess.

Detroit's build is a slow burn. They have the talent. It's just that all their high end talent are just starting out and there still a few more coming through the pipeline.
Honestly I see Detroit really reaping the benefits of their build in two years. Edvinsson, Seider, Cossa, Raymond, Kasper are all solid young players to build around. They still have ASP, Wallinder, Augustine, Danielson and Nygard in the pipeline.

 It's a slow burn.
