Came here to post that. The city has been spraying huge amounts of salt mix on our roads for about the past 10 years, any time there is a skiff of snow, which can't have been good for the environment. I know the trees along my community's central boulevard have been replaced twice now, they died again and the center section looks like a barren wasteland.
I find it somewhat hilarious that the city is so adament about the storm drains and runoff into the "environment", but they don't seem to have a problem with the huge amounts of chloride and other crap they spray on the roads... which goes into the storm drains.
And we used to make fun of Ontario and Quebec cars with rust eating their cars, but a lot of Calgary cars now seem to be doing the same thing.

Salt should be for the worst hills and at intersections, not to be blanketed like a fat guy with a salt shaker at a buffet across the whole city when 2cm of snow falls.

I hate the salt. For pathways and bike lanes it's maybe a bit more understandable, but dammit just get proper winter tires people.
Since the city has no clue on how to plow I don't mind salt on ice rink style intersections where unless you have studded winter tires they don't help much.
As for rust, I've noticed for many years now people in Calgary seem to think their cars are allergic to car washes during the winter.
Our bridges are getting theyre asses kicked by this crap. Look at the rails on top of the medians on some bridges, thr light standards, the traffic boxes all of which are rapidly corroded by that crap.
I saw exposed rebar on 2 bridge decks on Deerfoot north and south calf robe bridge completely degraded and the concrete was spalling to basically a consistency of loose gravel. They paved over this 2 days after i saw this.
The expansion gaps on some bridges grates are losing thickness and are warped and thinning . I drive all over the city and am dumbfounded by the structural design and horrendous maintenance protocols we have here .
Oh but lets just pave over it . Plaster it. Parge it...paint it ....and put more pearls on that pig . No one will notice

I’m allergic to 30min line ups for car washes during the winter
Alright, alright, I'll tell you the secret.
You need some key ingredients:
1. Windowless Van
2. Cleaning supplies (obviously)
3. Zip-ties
4. Local Vagrants (usually found at bottle depots or over-passes)
5. Threatening Weapon (gun, preferably)
And Voila! At home do-it-yourself-but-have-someone-else-do-it Car Wash!
Oh. And maybe a bone saw and some trash bags but thats really 'Dealer's Choice.'

I think I’d go with a shovel and bag of lye.
….or we could put time limits on car washes during the winter? One 5 min wash or the doors seal and your car gets incinerated. Your car is going to be filthy in 2 minutes dumbass, just rinse the salt off and get on with your life.

Calgarians would rather have a bridge collapse than pay $10 more per month in property taxes. They’d even accept the bridge collapsing with them on it if the alternative was $20 more per month.

Didn't City Council also make it illegal for you to wash your car? Heck, you can't wash it if it's dirty. You have to line up for the 30 minutes at those places.

I’m sure that is what the engineers responsible for the structural integrity of the bridges are thinking.
Getting to be higher and higher level conspiracy theory thinking around here.

Under the Stormwater Bylaw 37M2005, you may use only water to clean your car. If you are washing your car on the street, you must not use any kind of soap or any product other than water, and your car must not be overly dirty.
Since the Stormwater Bylaw states that only water may enter the storm sewers, we strongly suggest using a carwash to wash vehicles.
This specific bylaw was first passed in 2005, although, I'm sure something similar was in place before that because I remember hearing people saying you could get fined for using soap to wash your car on the street back in the 90s.

All you need to do is park your car on your lawn and wash away. As long as there is no soap going into your storm drain you are good.
