Let me know if I understand this correctly....
Player A has a contract that pays him $5M dollars AAV
His actually salary this year is $3.0M dollars.
He gets traded to B team but A team retains 50% of his salary,
Is that on the fully $5M or is it on the $3M?
|
when a team retains they retain both on AAV and actual salary. So in your example, Team A will be responsible for the $2.5 mil cap hit and $1.5 mil actual salary.

So last year we saw a third team take on some Cap space for a pick or whatever.
They also have to eat actual dollars?

Yes. But at the trade deadline about 75% of the salary for that year has been paid out.
So for double retention on an expiring contract, the 3rd team is paying little actual dollars

Sometimes more than 75% if a large portion was signing bonus.

I know Eklund is never right but he has been beating the drum pretty hard that JT Miller is going to be traded back to the Rangers for a deal around Kakko, prospect and a pick.

Not a chance Vancouver will trade miller. He is their best forward by a country mile. I don’t believe the rumours he had tockett don’t get along. Tockett is the reason millers game finally went to the next level.

Wonder what level of prospect and pick it would be? Normally miller is by far the most valuable asset in that trade. I’m not sure if there’s an estimate as to when he could be coming back. Has there been any word from Miller’s camp? It’s best for teams and media to give players space in this kind of situation so I wouldn’t be surprised if no one knows when he’s coming back.

At this point are some of the guys who were going to be flipped even tradeable?
Kuzmenko due to performance
Mantha due to injury
Barrie due to eating too much popcorn

True. But maybe Tocchet's tactics and pressure are what triggered Miller's need to step away. We don't know. So saying 'not a chance' seems heavy.

Jeff Marek said on the most recent episode of The Sheet, Dallas is going to get 1-2 big name players this year. He says they’re looking for players in every position but net. However, they want to keep Stankoven, Bourque and Bichsel. (I assume Johnston would also be a keeper for Dallas.)
Marek mentioned Andersson and Kadri as big names.
He advises his audience members to look for opportunities with Dallas if they have any big name players on their favourite teams.
My thoughts now…
I know Dallas will want to keep those names, but I think the ask from Calgary for Andersson would be big. I’d suggest Andersson for Lundqvist + Bourque. The numbers are close enough that Calgary could also retain to make the money fairly even, in return for a draft pick. Something like:
Andersson (30% retained) for Bourque + Lundqvist + 26 2nd.
What do ppl think? Am I an idiot?

I just don’t think that is enough. Bourque is far from a blue chip asset, Lundqvist has fallen out of favor and is a RFA and only a 2nd in two years? To retain 30% on a top pair dman?
Replace Bourque with Stankhoven if I am the Flames.

Andersson is worth a kings ransom and Conroy knows that.
Any return would be huge for the Flames, this is the year to get maximum value.
So it essentially comes down to Rasmus and if he wants to stay and rebuild for the next 3-5 years or go try for a cup in his prime.
I do know that Craig had interest in resigning him, but Rasmus didn’t want to commit long term in the summer.

I think Hoglander could be available:
https://twitter.com/user/status/1865244960108482843
He would be an interesting add, but not for CGY, we have too many LWs as it is. Also, the 3 x $3M extension starting next season brings a significant risk.
I thought he did great under Tocchet last year, scoring 24 goals, none of which were on the PP. This year he's getting the Kuzmenko treatment it seems, and he's barely getting any ice time since mid-Nov.
PS: Van is no good.

Yeah, in another time I would be in favour of taking on Hoglander as a buy-low distressed asset with potential upside. It makes no sense with the current roster though. It would also probably put the hammer down on Pelletier and I'd rather see that through at least for the rest of this season.

I think if the cost for Dallas to acquire Andersson is Stankhoven then Dallas walks away. From the rumour, it would be tough enough just to get Bourque included. I wonder about something like this:
To Dallas:
Andersson + Coleman (50% retained)
To Calgary:
Bourque
2025 1st round pick
2025 2nd round pick
Conditional 2026 2nd round pick (becomes a 1st round pick if Dallas makes the Conference finals in 2026)
Too much? Too little? Depends on your views on Bourque and what he projects to be. Personally I think he’s a good bet to be a solid 3rd line center in the NHL with an outside chance to develop into a 2nd line center.
