I actually thought of that. But that would means the Flames are spending about $6M this year, $6M next season, and another $1M retention to get maybe a 3rd round pick, maybe a 2nd?
That's a lotta money for a 2nd-3rd round pick.
And who's to say they could build up his value?

I don't see Trouba coming back to Canada.
I feel like this could be a Florida move

With what cap? Anyway I would pay Trouba about 2 million, he's a third pairing guy nowadays, not even close to being worth 8.

If the Rangers are starting to make their moves now, I wonder if the Kakko to CGY train starts picking up steam.

I could see Kakko for Andersson if the Rangers manage to get rid of Trouba.

There's been rumblings that Florida wants to move on from Ekblad, could see a swap there maybe?

I hope so. I’d love to see Kakko here.

Have Trouba be part of it as we then retain half of his salary and flip him to his final destination in a 3-way. That’d be fun.

As many high picks as we can get.

I could see them not re-signing him but they are already very shallow on the right side, they are looking to add if anything.

Has Ekblad regressed that badly?

I don't want the team fracturing mutiny with the Rangers to end. I hope they waive Trouba and the other teams were bluffing about a claim. Than I hope Trouba actively sabotages them as retribution. Looks good on that organization.

Ekblad to me looks pretty used up. His injury history likely has shortened his career a fair bit. I was watching the Panthers game the other night and the PbP ppl were saying he's their 3rd pairing shut down guy now?

First Line Centre
|
Just took a look at the Panthers defense core and it looks tough. Although having said that they are the Stanley Cup Champions. Wonder if there would be some interest in Andersson with the Flames taking on Ekblad.
To FLA
Andersson (50% retained)
Pospisil
To CGY
Lundell
Ekblad
Frees up a ton of cap space for the Panthers and they can load up for another Cup run. Pospisil can help fill the center role on the 3rd or 4th line for the near term. They are unlikely to sign Ekblad after this season anyhow for the price tag he will want with them having to resign Bennett as well.
For Calgary, they get a young center with high upside and have Ekblad they can flip at the deadline with retention for another asset (could likely get a 1st round pick with 50% retention near the deadline).
Forsling and Andersson would make a really, really good top pair. But I'm sure Florida has zero desire to trade Lundell as he is a long-term piece.

I think your instincts are right. Lundell is way too important for them. They fill a gap with Andersson but they open up another gap by trading Lundell.

No he still plays on the top pairing with Forsling and now he's back on the top PP unit too since the A. Boquist experiment has pretty much failed.
Ekblad's injuries have indeed caught up to him. Poor foot speed to begin with added with multiple knee injuries and the result is pretty obvious. He thinks the game at a high level but physically struggles to keep up.

Powerplay Quarterback

I dont think they view Ekblad as a negative asset. Hes their 1D, currently atoi is 23 min and they just won a cup with them.
I do think Florida would be interested in adding Rasmus though. Just not at the expense of ekblad.
Lundell would be a good center piece.
I still don't think the flames are close to trading Rasmus though.

No.
Among defensemen, he is their minutes played leader both per game and for the season, top shut down guy, top PP man, 2nd in SH time for the season, he is their top point getter, and their captain.
Not 3rd pairing shut down guy.
