I got the same feeling to be honest. Thought the interview could have been more tailored to how they are doing instead of trying to give kudos to the city for support.

Yes and they said it many times. How about talk about John and how they are doing.
Guy is slumped over looking devastated and he asks him if he’s looking for a beer league game.
Last question. Tell calgary what the city means.
Leslie is pretty good that was pretty bad.

It’s possible he talked to them ahead of time and they didn’t want to talk about their feelings and grief.

I really wish something could go Coleman’s way in life, just once.

This is what I think as well. Leslie had a close relationship with Johnny, and I assume the family as well. It could have been discussed beforehand.

Leslie knows them and was seemingly pretty close with Johnny.
How they're doing could get difficult and sad fast and they didn't want it to be that type of moment.
The team is trying to celebrate the family and I'm sure Leslie had some sense of what conversation they'd be comfortable with.

It would behoove the red squad to somehow propel the black rubber disk into the netted area.

Also, he may have discussed with them what they wanted to talk about in the interview and he was just trying to jog their memories with those questions.

Great job taking cues.
Guy “right now my brain isn’t working”
Ryan “so you going to play some beer league games “

I get it, but some things aren't appropriate for a live TV interview.
Even though many of us would prefer an authentic interview, we have to keep in mind that they have to stick to a script since it's Sportsnet's production. That means the usual platitudes and window dressing. The Gaudreau's appeared to understand that fully.
The important conversations were probably had in private over the last couple of days.
