Yeah, he fell down into the depth chart and was never likely going to get a shot at the NHL level at this point. I imagine he wants to try his luck in Russia or a European league at this point. Can't really blame him.

Often a healthy scratch on some really, really bad ECHL teams.

Makes sense. He could probably earn close to what he's earning now in Russia and he'll be closer to home, get to speak his native tongue, and other such benefits. his top end salary would be lower but it's probably clear to him that he's not going to get to that level in North America so why not go home.

Mega disappointing. I had high hopes for this player during his draft year and was stoked to see him picked by the Flames .

Too bad.

Taking a wild guess here, but deleting Nikolaev frees up a contract spot for Jaden Lipinski, who turns 20 on Monday.

Drafted players can leave the CHL and play minor pro when they're either 20 (before Dec. 31) or after four years of junior -- something Lipinski would now qualify for.

Lipinski is also a center.

Considering he is D+1 and seems to be producing/playing well.... this seems like a hot take?

A guy we want to develop in our system and not waste the pick at the least.

Lipinski has 4th line c vibes for me. D3f worth seeing what he's got.

How hes playing well, he has 1 goal in his overage year and is not a PPG.

I really don't think they're doing this to free up a contract spot. They already have 5 spots open IIRC. This is probably just the player wanting the freedom to explore other options in NA before going back overseas, and the Flames granting him that.

He's been trying to crack the roster of one of the top AHL teams his entire time as a pro.

I wish Nikolaev well. He came over, worked hard, but it just didn't work out. I assume he is going to Europe, so good luck to him there.

He's in his D+2, not D+1.

That being said, he is putting up not so good numbers. It's typically a bad sign to see an overager produce so poorly, even if they're projected to be bottom of the roster guys.
