What is Kadri's value in the open market, is there any validity to Doug McClean saying that TO is Kicking tires?

I suspect he is trying to find a center that projects to play in the top six. Not sure Toronto has that.
I think at the end of the day trading with Toronto will be moot on any significant asset (Andersson, for example). I bet there will be other teams, several of them, that will have offers Toronto can’t compete with.

One team I am beginning to wonder about is Ottawa. If they get relief from the league on their 1st round pick penalty, is there a deal to be made there?

I’m sure there is discussion but the real question is, do the Flames want to move him. People close to the team don’t think so. That said, I’m sure the Leafs and other teams have at least made the call.

I’d say it’s pretty low probability Kadri gets dealt, especially now. 2-3 years down the road, who knows.

It is foolish if the answer to this question isn't an immediate yes at this point. He's 34 and looks like he's going to struggle to get 40 points this season. If someone else will take him we should be all for it.

Kadri controls where he goes and his contract is cumbersome. I doubt he is going anywhere

Well, write Conroy a letter.

Somewhat off topic, but Ken King once wrote me a kind reply to a letter I sent. RIP Ken King.

Contract and age aside, I think Kadri would be ECSTATIC to go back to Toronto.

If this is the case, and I don’t doubt it, what is a reasonable trade?

For the Flames, no retention is a must. Second would be a top prospect (Cowan or Mitten) or a first. I think.

It sounds like the NHL cap is going to the moon. Kadri's 7 mill isn't as rich as it used to be.
112 players make more money than that.

I think we might have to take a contract back to make the money work. which would be the big roadblock to any trade with them....

Right. There doesn’t appear to be any easily identifiable candidates on the Leafs roster that would make the money work.

Reaves + Robertson + pick/prospect? Not even sure if that gets it done, salary wise.

I wonder if the Leafs would be willing to trade Marner.

Doubt they will do it unless it is a swap for an equivalent level of player that contributes at the same level.

Then the question was Huberdeau was a free agent so could they sign him?

On a personal level I didn't mind the initial deal but really thought the writing was on the wall and it was a rebuild. As such, even moreso in hindsight, they should've flipped Huberdeau rather than begging him to be here. He got the Treliving special and here we are.
This! He actually got really good value for Tkachuk (when viewed at time) - he got one of the best left wingers in the game coming off a 115 point season, a top pairing d-man, a 1st and a decent prospect.

His mistake was signing Huburdeau to a retirement deal before he'd played a single game for the Flames and then throwing away the extra first in order to move Monahan.

He should have held off signing Huburdeau to see how he fit in Calgary, then traded him mid-season to recover value when it became apparent Calgary wasn't a good fit, and LTIRed Monahan to sign Kadri. Thus saving a 1st and, potentially, getting back a 1st or a 2nd + player, for Huburdeau mid-season.

I'm sure he could have found a GM that bit on Huburdeau rebounding if he'd only had a rough start to his first season on a Sutter team, and not 2.25 terrible seasons under two coaches like now.

Not at this point. I suspect he stays, long term. With the expected leap in the cap, I bet he stays.

I'm just perusing their list of prospects, and IMO it's slim pickings- other than the aforementioned Minten and Cowan.

Also, I can't believe they took D Ben Danford in the first round. He's good, but not first round good....

Because they see Calgary’s cap space.

I hope Conroy weaponizes that cap space. Bring in a bad contract or be the broker of a deal that we retain salary for. Of course, these type of deals would bring in draft picks or prospects, not cost us any.

We aren’t winning the cup and probably aren’t needing our full cap hit for a few years, so any deal that falls within that timeline would work.

The only caveat would be that we don’t bring in a dressing room cancer. If we do make a trade for a guy like that it is either minors or buyout.

But it’s a good use of excess cap space that can bring in more draft capital.

Haha. You're right. But when things settled a bit I think the initial euphoria subsided and logic came into play.

If there’s an upside here, it should be that Craig Conroy had a front row seat.
