So who gets the blame? The top (Katz) or the bottom (Shane Olmsted, assistant equipment manager).

I think it will be closer to the bottom.

It's McDavid.

He's been thrust into a leadership role his disposition is ill-suited for. Awkward off the ice and generally annoyed on the ice. It's performative at best and unconvincing.

Dreger said it's too many cooks in the kitchen

Sounds like OBC meddling instead of letting their hires do their jobs

Excellent. Hopefully McDavid is annoyed with the constant circus.

Guy looks like the type that knows he's better than anyone else on the team, and expects everyone to listen to him because he knows better than you.

I've not watched the Oilers playoff docuseries on Amazon, but for awhile, it kept playing the stupid ad clip, and it was real cringe when he was losing it and screaming at everyone to effing go. I'm like, that sounds like a whiny brat.

I also think the leadership act rings hollow if people think he's going to bolt.

His old agent is GM.

His old junior coach is head coach.

They just gave his best buddy $14M.

They've made every move within that organization to appease him, and IMO I think it's not a lock he stays in Edmonton still.

I do wonder if there are questions starting to arise about if he's just going to bolt as a UFA and what type of pressure that's also cooking up internally in the organization.

What if he is part of the circus? Or better yet, he IS the circus?

The only thing that I question is to what degree he and Leon talked before he re-signed. Meaning did Leon re-sign with an understanding that McDavid is going to as well. They are close. I would be surprised if they weren't talking in those ways.

I think a question though is how long does McDavid sustain such high performance, including because of how much the Oilers have overplayed him.

I doubt McDavid straight up said I'm staying TBH.

I think the Oilers put a $112M cheque in front of Draisaitl and the took the money that wasn't going to come from anywhere else ($16M x 7 in order to get an equivalent as UFA)

McDavid should just say I want max/max.

And why not? If he's that generational, then he deserves the max deal allowable.

If the cap is $90M, then its 18x8 for him.

McDavid so clearly doesn't want to be there, and the organization knows this.

The "old Connor buddies" hirings are an attempt by the organization to get him to stay.

Flames could fit him in...they should leak that they would do it. He even likes the jerseys.
McDavid will see Wolf and realize he has no chance moving forward unless he joins him.

McDavid may have said to Drai that he can't promise to be an Oiler long term and that Drai needs to make the best decision for him. It is unlikely Drai would have got more money elsewhere. If McDavid leaves and Drai wants to go, he can force a trade. He'd be villainized in Edmonton, but he could join a long line of great players who got out when they could.

I am not sure how McDavid could promise he would re-sign when negotiations hadn't even begun.

Well we know at the very least it has to be more than his buddy Leon got.

Watch McDavid sign for significantly less elsewhere, with the expressed reason being he "wants to win."

Edmonton may never stop burning.

The chafing on their fragile egos would be unprecedented.

Hopefully they erect a statue just prior to him bolting for a discount.

The rage after the Gretzky trade was mostly directed towards then-owner Peter Pocklington, but was quite significant. Then of course the Pronger debacle (which was impeccably timed).

I wonder if the NHL pressured Pock to get Wayne to LA to grow the game.
