US prosecutors demand Google divest Chrome to end search monopoly

Nov 21 (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors on Wednesday argued to a judge that Google (GOOGL.O), must sell its Chrome browser, share data, and search results with rivals, and take a range of other measures to end its monopoly on online search.
The proposals are wide-ranging, including barring Google from re-entering the browser market for five years and insisting Google sell its Android mobile operating system if other remedies fail to restore competition.

What else was there for search?

Ask Jeeves, Altavista, I guess Bing is still around though nobody uses it...

"Google doesn't have a monopoly on search." Bing whispers weakly from the shadows.

I was surprised when I switch to Firefox on Android, how painless it was. Though I do have a Firefox account so my desktop and passwords are synced. I can see what tabs are open on either system to access them, send pages directly, bookmarks, all the good stuff. And Android doesn't seem to mind at all, not having Chrome be the master.

I'm just envisioning all these elderly people who were the design and coding team for Netscape sitting around an Elderly Care facility...

Legacy search is dead anyway.

Nothing too see here.

How big a part of their overall business is their browser? It's kind of what they are known for, but I assume they have more lucrative things going on.

I'd say this was important up to two years ago. Then AI came and everything is changing rapidly. I barely use Chrome anymore, it's all AI search now. And I suspect a growing number of people are doing the same thing.

Or search engine I guess, which it mainly why people use the browser. It seems kind of like the same thing to me.

AI is a far superior search engine.

Google is obviously known most for their search engine, Google. But perhaps your post proves the DOJ's point better than any lawyer could argue.

You still need to know how to use it correctly, otherwise it will fulfill your confirmation bias as it appears to be the case with most low resolution thinkers.

I see the confusion, and my mistake. I just use Chrome for searching (address bar things). Edge and Firefox are my browsers of choice. Chrome is a resource hog.

Google has a monopoly because their products work better than everyone else’s by a large margin and a large portion of the global population is not going to migrate to anything different in the near future.
