That's a tough in division trade IMO.

Seattle would probably need Calgary to blow away other offers to trade that guy in division

Seattle values him as top 3 draft pick still, so a 1st ++

Yeah that's why it's tough for me.

Seattle is going to want top 5 pick value, especially from a division rival.

And he just hasn't shown enough in junior, or the AHL, or the NHL since that draft to warrant top 5 pick value still.

The thing about Wright is under normal circumstances this would be the first season he'd be eligible for the AHL. Last year he posted almost 0.8 PPG as an underager.

He may not be living up to going 4th overall in the draft, but he's easily still tracking as a top six forward, maybe even a first liner. We're a long way from bust territory.

It will be interesting to see if Conroy takes a different approach next season when it comes to short-term vets and/or PTOs. It’s early in the season still so things could absolutely change but, so far, most of the upcoming UFAs that we all assumed would be traded by the upcoming TDL are likely not to return much. Obviously Mantha is done for the season so that’s just bad luck but he was not trending to return much in a trade. Kuzmenko is not lighting it up and he likely would be tough to trade for anything of value - and he would likely require full retention in any trade. Barry looks like the odd man out on defence and will also likely not return much at all. The only upcoming UFA that could result in a decent return at this point is Vladar.

If Conroy looks at how this year went, does he bother signing players with the intention of likely trading them at the deadline? I guess they also serve as depth options but I think they should be increasing the number of younger players on the team next year. I hope they will have roster spots available for guys like Klapka, Honzek, Poirier, Parekh or Brz to make the team… or whichever other younger players impress in camp or on the Wranglers.

I just think the flames will already have potential trade chips for next year’s deadline (Andersson and/or Coleman). And I think they have plenty of young players ready to compete internally for roster spots rather than sign vets to take those spots or create competition in camp. I know the old saying of “have to steal a spot from a vet” but the reality we see in the NHL is that a young player can out-perform a vet and still have to wait for the spot to become available due to injury. The spots do eventually become available because injuries happen but I would rather skip the wait and see the young players battle each other for those spots next year.

Columbus seems like they could be a good trade partner. They could use the likes of Rasmus, Coleman, Kuzmenko.

5 points separate ten teams for the last two playoff spots in the east. I feel like now is the time to try trading with those teams before any of them go on a heater or a free fall.

Nah, he has major health concerns IMO. He hasn’t played since last season because of a back injury. Back injuries as an 18 year old are a major red flag. Give me Fantilli

You can see on the forehead where the horn was supposed to be.

Now THAT is a Calgary Flames signing!!

"Sorry Boys, we couldn't get the Unicorn so we'll have to settle for his vastly less talented, much more ordinary brother..."

I have definite concerns with Wright's attitude, but I would consider giving up a late first, a young player, and a prospect to get him. He still has a world of potential, and he's only 20.

Lindstrom had back surgery yesterday, Waddell called it "minor" surgery and is expected to play later this season. In other words code for "I screwed up with this pick and I'm praying"

Exactly. I don’t want a young guy that just had back surgery. Nevermind the ~year of missed development, that screams ongoing back issues. No thanks

I still want Wyatt Johnson. I know its a big stretch but he is been pretty bad this year and is dropping down the lines. If Dallas is in win now mode they may be interested in Coleman and Andersson.

Not saying this would happen, but having Andersson and Coleman (retain on both or whatever) would be significantly better for them this year and next compared to having Wyatt. I am also not saying that would be a fair trade, just a thought process.
