So Button finally admits that Edmonton is no good?
I think it’s one of (a) the media attempting reverse psychology so that their collective golden finals pick starts reversing trends or (b) a desperate attempt to be first in the “I made a mistake with my preseason prognosis” line.
Either way, much like Edmonton itself, TSN’s attempt at course-correction is NO GOOD!

It's not a coincidence that this came after losing back to back on the road in Toronto and Montreal. All the national media guys actually saw them first hand instead of in highlights the next morning.

Congrats to the Oilers on beating another crappy non-playoff team. I’m sure this means it’ll be a nice, easy breezy march to the Cup finals for the elite powerhouse Oilers.
Cross Eyes with a nice goal, should still get his 10M plus next year. Doesnt matter that his D game is lazy and weak. Pay that man
People who are saying he won't get $10M on his next contract given his play this year isn't as good as it was last year are forgetting that they also have Nurse on the team making $9.25M per year and Bouchard's agent is 100% going to use that as leverage to make sure Bouchard is paid more.
He also has arbitration rights so I doubt he takes another short-term bridge deal for less money. He might not get $10M in arbitration depending on how the rest of the year goes, but he's likely getting a significant raise next year regardless.

It takes actually watching their games to understand their goaltending and defense are poor. It takes all of prime McDavid and Draisaitl to overcome this and as both of them drift towards their early 30s on higher cap hits the team passes their apex and slides into Pittsburgh Penguins territory without the Stanley Cups.

The Oilers are a pretty slow hockey team and it's much more apparent in person or even watching an entire game as opposed to the odd highlight package where you get to see an McDavid end to end rush.

This is a slow, old, undisciplined hockey team. They win when Draisaitl and Mavi carry them on their own. When they don't, they lose in spectacular fashion. Two players that average over 21 mins a night that are no longer in their early/mid 20's and have zero supporting cast doesn't produce a happy ending if you are an Oilers fan.
Good thing I am far on the other side of that. I will enjoy the implosion.
How the hell can a team that it’s in an obvious rebuild, be ahead of a team that just made the Stanley cup final?
Edmonton is No Good
It just goes to show how many horse shoes they had up their ass last year. Combine that with the above average McPP and the ref assists, and it was never a tenable situation.

Yeah they are back to being not good when 97 and 29 are not on the ice:
The reason they had more consistent team performance is because in the half of the game that didn't have 97 or 29 on the ice the team had gotten better, but that is regressing again this season.
I was thinking about this with a more critical mindset…assuming that the oilers are who they are, and for hypothetical purposes they never change, what is it that makes them win or lose? Of course Mavi scoring highlight goals, but then racking up minuses like Halloween candy is a big part of this.
I’ve kinda gotten to the thought that with the perpetual double shifting, the teams that have the greatest success against the Oilers have a second line that’s capable of checking and scoring. We can accept that there’s likely one line per opponent that can hold their own…but it’s the second line that matters. I think teams are figuring this out and deploying the second line to defend like the first.
Why? Well, the glitter twins double shift and they play the 2 minute power play. Going up against 2 checking lines gets tiring…it’s literally a line resting while you are grinding against other defenders.
What’s different is that the team around Mavi is aging and you see the frustration. I’m not sure that it’s a certainty that he re-signs this summer.
Saw a fantastic conspiracy tweet: Jackson the former agent is forcing Mavi to leave and he will become Mavi’s agent again and make a bajillion dollars in commission. I look forward to seeing many more of these conspiracies going forward!
