Not sure you can give a player with zero track record more than a year to recover from injury

Except...they arent "giving up on him".

They are sending him to the development league to....you know....develop the things he needs to get better at in order to play in the NHL.

Like every single team does with their players every single year after training camp ends.

Yeah it is what it is. He didn't outplay the guys that are showing. Its ####ty that he's on waivers but thats the reality of it. Really dig the vibe that the staff has put out right now. I'm pulling for Honzek and if he only gets 9 games so be it.

Look at it the other way also. Edmonton has nothing in the pipeline. They refuse to chase real defence. Sign a bunch of guys that have a name but don't move the needle. Conroy has a vision and its already paying dividends with the young cast. Pretty ####ing cool. Just made that fresh Calgary air even better.

Waivers give the player a wake up call. Hope pelletier looks at it that way if he clears. He has potential but hasn't done anything in nhl. Injuries or not. It's a performance league.

Because it makes sense?

Pelltier didn’t earn a roster spot. It’s pretty easy to see why he’s been placed on waivers. Just because it’s no longer the “official” motto doesn’t mean it’s not relevant.

I know it's fan nature but some of us second guess conroy like we should have his job. Lol it's not that easy. Give him some time then you can have his job I am sure we will all be hired.

Joking aside 5 years from now let's see how it goes! Seems to have a plan

I am okay with it. Sucks that Pelts is a first rounder, but at some point in his development path, he needs to be able to translate that into consistency within the NHL. To date, he hasn't done that. Draft pedigree or not. Honzek and Klapka have taken huge steps forward while Pelts simultaneously took a step back. That said, I hope no one claims him and that he gets his game and swagger back.

The difference being he needs to pass through waivers to develop further.

Time will tell whether this was the correct choice.

There was not a great option here.

It seems to have stuck around.
If you watch stuff like “The Chase” they still emphasize that nothing will be “given” to players. They still push the line that you have to steal a job. The slogan may be gone but the attitude is alive and kicking.

There is an entire list of players that came out yesterday that have to pass through waivers in order to get to the AHL so they can develop further.

There was only one choice here.

The NHL is not a development league.

I just think too many people equate putting on waivers with getting rid of a player.

That's not the case at all.

Pelletier's best path back to a secured position with the Flames is to get through waivers, find his game, and come back up.

Holding a spot as the 13th forward and not playing isn't as likely as a path to get there.

They are hoping to get him to the Wranglers and keep him, and they're picking the waiver glut day to try and make that happen.

May not work; he could be claimed.

But this isn't a choose Hanley over Pelletier situation at all.

I don’t really see the fuss. Pelletier didn’t earn a spot in the NHL and needs to play consistent hockey to earn that spot, so he needs to be in the NHL.

That’s good asset management. Waiver eligibility just is what it is, but sending him down with a bunch of other players is also good asset management.

Keeping young guys like Honzek and Klapka that actually earned their spots? Also good asset management.

People who think asset management comes down entirely to “make sure you don’t lose an asset for nothing no matter what” have probably never actually managed an asset in their lives. Because taking that approach can have negative consequences, which is the case here.

Pelletier missed half of last season. Let him find his game in the AHL again instead of eating popcorn as our extra forward.
The only team that I could see potentially picking pelts is the Habs due to the injury issues/French connection

We're literally talking about a guy that couldn't crack the top 9 on a team that will likely finish in the bottom 5 of the league. If he goes, 'c'est la vie"

I was actually quite surprised to see that he only has 10 points in 37 games. Goes to show that you overvalue players within your system, I would have guessed closer to a 0.66 ppg. He is only 23, hope he clears and gets some good development in and comes back stronger than ever before. Have some trust in Conroy, he is doing things differently than we have seen in the past and what we have done in the past wasn't overly successful.

This decision wasn’t just about Pelletier’s play in this camp. He has 10 pts in 37 NHL games. He hasn’t earned a spot on a scoring line, he doesn’t bring the elements the coaches want on the 4th line, and he isn’t going to develop in the press box.

Maybe he’ll find his scoring touch with the Wranglers and graduate to the big team later in the season. Maybe he doesn’t have the tools to score at the NHL level (which seems to be the way things are leaning). But there’s zero reasons besides his draft pedigree to gift him a top-9 role with the Flames out of camp. He just hasn’t show he can handle it.

Guy with a ton of promise fails to live up to the hype.

Hard to not correlate this to spending too much time with Hoover Dough

I wonder if the reaction is the same with the Canes fan base over seeing Suzuki (drafted 2 spots after JP) being waived yesterday as well?

Also a bigger guy who plays C.

Maybe both clear and their is a "change of scenery" trade?

Sharangovich starts the year on the IR, they didn't have to waive Pelletier. Or Cooley I suppose. Just weird decision making.
