NHL/NHLPA to extend season shorten preseason
https://twitter.com/user/status/1841277604067737707
It was being discussed in another thread. I had said the NHL is more likely to extend the regular season and shorten the preseason.
All about money.

NFL went 17 will likely go 18 soon. NBA added the play in.
Was just a matter of time. The NHL will never shorten the regular season. With more teams we will get more games.

Toss the bye week. Don’t need a bye week and an all star break. That should get you into mid June territory to finish the playoffs.

this is never happening
I would rather have more regular season and less preseason over what we have currently. Preseason is ridiculous at full price...we are all watching the games anyway they might as well count.

I just wish they would be underway by the first of October. Pushing the season back to the middle of the second week of October is ridiculous.

Agree 100%
This week before the season starts just seems like a waste

I have been beating this drum for a long time. Preseason is way too long. Cut the number of preseason games to 4 max and start the regular season.
I was thinking they could do something like raise the roster limit to 30 or something for the first 5 games of the regular season so teams could still try out some guys before they send them down or cut them. Granted, the salary cap comes into play but I am sure they could figure it out. Some teams might still just dress all their veterans to get a jump on teams still auditioning players, but whatever.

You guys can probably correct me, but aren't preseason games cheaper to attend?
So they want to keep the extra games but have an excuse to charge top dollar for them.

Technically, they would be removing 2 home preseason games and replacing them with 1 home regular season game. So it's probably a wash as far as revenue.

I haven't had seasons for a while but they used to be full priced and mandatory purchase for season ticket holders

We should be two weeks into a regular season already to be honest. There is absolutely no need to wait for October to start, much less the middle of it. The nhl season goes on way too long.

I remember the NHL season used to start around today, which I remember because it's my birthday. Why do they start so late now? Another example of the NHL 'fixing' what ain't broken (don't get me started on the playoff format)
EDIT: am I grumpy old man now, he wonders to himself

I think the season is fine at 82 games and the bigger issue is the length of the playoffs. The final game of the season was June 24th. That's just ridiculous.

I can't imagine who would spend money on them. If you are going to a game that doesn't matter, the Penticton tournament rosters are much more interesting and the tickets are far cheaper.
As far as watching online, I watched a bunch of that tournament and about a period and a half of preseason.

I believe the season starts later now due to ESPN and their coverage of the MLB WC round the first week of October. Not a fan myself of the later start

Only if they bring back neutral site games from the 90s. Who doesn't want to see the Flames playing in Saskatoon or Cincinnati again?

It's part of the season ticket package, you have no choice.
They could make them cheaper, but then they would raise the prices on the regular season games to match revenue.
Most season ticket holders who don't want to go sell them for a fraction of the actual cost.
