I wanted Draisaitl to sign with a different team, because I think without McDavid he is not nearly the player his numbers indicate - still an amazing talent, but I don't think he's the 2nd best C in the league.

The one thing I don’t understand is the “PA should pressure him…..”. Why should they care in the cap era? They are getting 50% HRR if he signs for 17M or 1M.
In fact the more he takes, the less everyone else gets
The more teams that are close to the cap the better for the PA. The PA wants as many owners as possible willing to spend more money.

The players are collectively getting 50% of HRR anyway.
if you have 3 players on your team making max AAV in a year where the cap is 88M, those three make 17.6M/year and the other 20 average 1.76M per year.
I actually think a large part of the PA would not want that

There is pressure on players at the top end to get as much as possible. While you are correct about leaving less for others, we hear frequently about this pressure and wanting to continually set a higher bar.

I don't think its like the pre cap days where there was definitely pressure to squeeze every bit.
their share is limited
for argument sake, if the strategy of signing max AAV was successful every time, soon enough, each team would only have 5 players

I have long felt that he is the most overrated player in the league. He is no scrub. He does have talent. He is not in the upper echelon that most people have him in.

The PA has never cared about the little guy.

THey want the star players on par with other sports. Some NBA teams prior to the new tax would load up on 3-4 players and fill out the rest of the roster for vet mins and a MLE.

The NFL you really only have a shot when your QB is on the rookie scale deal, Mahomes and the defence carried them last year, but it could have been bad because they lacked talent at the skill positions.

The difference is in the NHL you need a team, and depth. You can't win with just 1 guy.

To me his comparable is Ryan Getzlaf... but without the cup.

On the topic of Huberdeau, and echoing the earlier sentiment that Draisaitl is very good but his numbers are inflated playing with McDavid — something that just occurred to me is that if Draisaitl signed as a UFA next year with a 14M AAV, imagine the pressure of performing under that without the benefit of 97. A couple of “average” seasons and suddenly he’s the new Huberdeau in that city with that hefty price tag.

Instead, he gets his payday and still doesn’t have to worry about being the star attraction so long as McDavid is around. Win-win for him.

Getzlaf aged normally. He was a ppg player until he was 32 and at that time injuries started to pile up.

It's pretty rare that a player stays healthy and productive after 32.

Only 58 skaters in the NHL last year were 33 or older.
16 of those were over 0.8 ppg.

It's a pretty special list of players.

Crosby, Josi, Stamkos, Hedman, Kane, Kadri, Kreider, Zeccarello, Kopitar, Marchessault, O'Reilly, Ovechkin, Tavares, Marchand, Malkin and Pavelski.

IMO Getzlaff in his prime had a lot more ability to dominate and take over a game. He was a true center and could drive a #1 line without a superstar.

Not sure where you got 58 from. I see 101 on Hockey Reference.

Oh, probably. Hockey Reference shows everyone (minimum 1 game).

It's not a matter of if but when, and how many (seasons).

Of the three outcomes (extend, trade, walk) that would've served them the best by far in terms of longevity and sustaining the product beyond what this current batch of declining players has left.

Instead they choose to strap themselves into this Titanic for better or worse.

Huberdeau's contract isn't good, but at least it's no Draisaitl in a few years time.
