It's not "kids these days" many old timers refused to play in their drafted city. Players used to hold out at camp even under contract.

They should change the draft rules so NHL teams have NCAA players rights for 5-6 years.
At least teams would have some leverage if players decide not to sign with their drafting team.
Alternatively, you only let teams draft 17/18 year old players in the first round. Before long you only have maybe 15ish 17/18 year old players being drafted per year.
That makes it much tougher for college hold outs. They will be finished 4 years of college a year before the team rights expire which would leave them hanging in limbo for a year. Where as right now, the rights expire if they just complete their 4 years of college.

There was a time when players were just happy to be given a contract, took whatever the owner offered and had no pension or health benefits. Maybe that is the model. A little gratitude for the owners who take the risk that a government won’t build them an arena and actually run the team.

Maybe they should just make college players and NHL teams declare their intentions to sign after 2 years. Why hold their rights for 4? If the NHL team doesn't want him, he can re-enter the draft or become a free agent. If the player tells the team he's going to sign whenever he leaves college, than he's beholden to that. If the player doesn't want to sign, it's the same with any other draft pick that doesn't want to sign.

5 years would be perfect. Makes refusing to sign with your drafted team have a one year consequence, so they can't just play four years and ignore the fact that they were drafted in the first place.

Being drafted by an NHL team is totally different than any other circumstance in regards to a career. The analogy of being the same as training for years for a certain job and not getting to choose the firm you go to doesn’t fly. Hockey is a spectator sport, and their salaries are paid by the FANS. If you don’t like the team that drafts you, you are free to go elsewhere when you’re 26. Until then, you can damn well report for duty.
By the way Americans, this is OUR sport that WE invented and Canada still accounts for a huge chunk of NHL revenue, which is what your salaries are based on.

But they are free to go elsewhere before they are 26. Those are the rules. I also work at a corporation like the Calgary Flames. My salary is also paid for by customers, just like the NHL. A fan is a customer. So I guess my salary is also paid for by fans.

Is this another case of an American player not wanting to play in a smaller Canadian city?

My point is that you should stay with the NHL team that drafts you until you hit UFA- I guess that means 7 seasons, or until you’re 27. If there’s other mitigating circumstances, then ask for a trade- but you report.

Quite true.
Players are free to go and play for a non-NHL team. They are not free to collect an NHL salary while doing so. Them's the breaks.
In effect, the league is a single employer, and if you want to advance your career with the company, you go to whichever branch Head Office sends you to. They can get away with this because they pay far more than any other firm in the same business.

Or request a trade, which he did, and is pretty much always granted.

The 7 Canadian teams account for what- like 30+ percent of the NHL’s revenue? These Amerks need to show more respect.

I actually think I like Yager better than McGroarty as a prospect, so this works just fine for Winnipeg.

I'm on board with that. Or even just letting teams retain their rights for one year after their junior or college career is done just to give them a little more leverage to sign the players.
To make it maybe more fair for drafted players who are unlikely to ever be signed to get the freedom to move on earlier, they could impose a stricter limit on the number of unsigned drafted players a team could retain their rights to. More of them would get released to try their luck elsewhere, but teams would be protected from losing ones that they definitely want to sign. Just spit balling, but you could say that every July 1st, a team can only have "x" number of unsigned prospects and the rest must be released.
People can't look at a professional sports leagues the same as a regular employer. Joining a league is very different than getting hired by a company. When someone joins a league, it comes with rules that you agree to for the privilege of being able to join. It doesn't matter if it is a major professional sports league, or a local bowling league. If the current rules are hurting some teams, they are within their right to try and change them.
The problem is that there are a few teams in the NHL that benefit from the way it is now. Like the owners of the Rangers for example likely aren't complaining.

Rutger McGroarty sounds like the most made up name of all time.

Perhaps named after the late, great dutch actor Rutger Hauer of Blade Runner, Ladyhawke, and the Hitcher?
I'm old.

Yager can rip pucks. I think he has 40 goal potential.
Good deal for the Jets all things considered
