He was acting GM in that time between Holland leaving and Bowman being officially hired. So he signed all of Henrique, Skinner, Arvidsson, Janmark, Perry, and Brown while leaving Holloway and Broberg to the side.

Oof. Okay. That a pretty grim 'Murderer's Row' of awful signings.

Management teams sometimes actually talk to each other about upcoming items of business. Wild idea, I know.

And if Jackson knew that Holland was leaving (which he did), then everything on Holland's plate was Jackson's responsibility to oversee anyway.

He prioritized getting all these veterans, and presumably did so not expecting anyone to try an offersheet like this.

A couple of years back they did this with Ryan McLeoud where it go to September and he signed for like 781k after scoring 12 goals the previous year. Even Treliving did this with Mangiapane after the 18-19 season where he went until training camp to get a one year league minimum deal.

It will be interesting to see if teams maybe look to protect against the Holloway level offers and try to sign these guys earlier in the summer than have another team double their salary at the risk of a 3rd round pick.

I'm not even going to pretend that I know how Oilers management operates, although your assertion there seems to make sense to me.

So...is the general thinking here that the Oilers Management thought they had these two in the bag and just weren't worried about them?

For instance, I look at the Flames and Conroy's activity this season, and he clearly had a list, and checked it twice, but there was a priority and order to his actions.

For instance, Zadorov was annoyed that he wasn't getting any communication, because he was lower on Conroy's list and the GM had other things to take care of before he got to Zadorov until his hand was forced.

And you can make similar cases for several other guys that were shown the door.

Not sure if asked and answered already, but given that the Oilers would be $7.2 million over the $88-million salary cap if the deals were matched, how long are they allowed to be over the cap or is it rather just a compliance issue for day 1 of the regular season? Just curious about whether they can wait and see about the “temporary relief” for Kane's cap hit if he starts the season on LTIR (while recognizing they still would have to clear additional cap space above and beyond that but what is the true deadline on dealing with the overage issue).

You can exceed the cap by 10% during the offseason, but need to file a cap-compliant roster (maximum 23 players that includes a minimum of 12 forwards, 6 defencemen, and 2 goalies) a couple of days before the start of the regular season (the date changes every year).

Oilers opening night roster is going to be 12 players.

Signing old farts rather than locking down players on the upswing should be an approach that is no longer followed by GM’s

Clearly the Oilers miscalculate here, but this is hardly unique to them. Most teams prioritize UFAs because there is more competition for them. Then they turn to their RFAs because they generally have more time with them.

All remain unsigned RFAs. All those teams signed UFAs, I'm pretty sure.

Hey! I didn’t sign with them. Of course, for $15M a year I probably would…

None of those teams have a cap problem (outside Toronto and Robertson) so they can do that approach. Using up all your cap space on UFAs and then thinking that a player will take some crap offer is pretty bad asset management.

When you have enough cap space to match any offer you can afford to wait it out with your RFAs.

So given the moves today, perhaps looking like they'll match Broberg, let Holloway go?

I hope he plays like ass and still requests a trade at the end of the season, and they have to package the 2nd they got to move him.
