Had a thought of what would a Draisaitl trade look like if it happened in the next couple weeks completely out of the blue. I seriously doubt the Oilers brass would have the guts to do something like that but what if they did and Draisaitl’s camp made it clear he was going to free agency? Using LA as a trade partner because I think they more than anyone else would be able to re-sign him to an extension immediately.
To LA:
Draisaitl (extended @ $14.5 million AAV FOR 8 years)
To Edmonton:
Kuemper
Clark
2025 1st round pick (top 5 protected)
2025 2nd round pick
Too much for Draisaitl? Not enough? It’s obviously a huge gamble because most would assume trading Draisaitl puts the nail in the coffin - McDavid is leaving. All they can hope is that McDavid likes Kuemper as much as he likes Draisaitl.

I think it might cost even more than that. Clarke and a 1st is a solid starting point though

I would be surprised if the Oilers ever traded Draisaitl.
He could outright tell them that he won't return after this contract and they'll totally think it's a lock to keep him.

Totally agree. This is just a hypothetical. It could gauge what a smart GM would do if the return was good enough. But the oilers don’t have a smart GM. E=NG.

Wasn’t this basically a done deal a few weeks ago as per that idiot Stauffer? If he was actually agreeing to a hometown discount, he likely would have signed by now. It would be hilarious if this drags into the season and causes a massive distraction.

Such an interesting conversation. I can honestly see them walking him to free agency on purpose.
The thought being this is their only chance at a cup and trading him would be throwing in the towel

What’s delicious about walking pissy to UFA would be the absolute frenzy from the start of the season to the end…and getting louder by the week. Massive distraction.
And the dawning realization that they get nothing for him.
But wait…there’s more.
Whilst all of this is happening around pissy, Mavi’s contract is still ticking down.
What an absolute delight on July 1, 2025 if pissy signs elsewhere for boatloads of dollars and Mavi’s eyes light up about the new salary for pissy…and Mavi doesn’t sign a new contract!
Here’s one more thing: many teams say “oh well, salary off the books so we can replace the player”. From pissy’s existing salary, I don’t think greasers will get anywhere near comparable value.
Delish!

They'll definitely walk him to FA
They're way too proud and think their #### don't smell. Every one wants to play there and anything to the contrary is unfathomable or a lie.
The excuses for going past the TDL without an extension or trade will be great. It's in the bag, signed and sealed, they just don't want to distract from the season with contract chatter, etc, etc. Just the same as with Johnny.

Draisaitl will be absolutely bombarded with pressure from the Oilers media after every game if he’s not re-signed. After every game where McDavid assisted on a couple of his goals it will be “Don’t you think playing here with McDavid for the next 8 years would be better than anywhere else?” Wink* Draisaitl responds with a passive aggressive laugh.

"Leon, you were 1 game after from the Stanley Cup. You enter this season as the cup favourites, with the 2 best players in the history of hockey on the same team. Knowing you're on the verge of wining many cups if you stay here, perhaps the greatest dynasty in NHL history, wouldn't it be best to extend as soon as possible?"

What’s funny is if Draisaitl responded with this:
“If you guys keep asking me about it, it will make my decision even easier.”
How long until those reporters are shut down or even fired because the oilers fans will blame the media for making Draisaitl (and, therefore, McDavid) leave.

If Draisaitl isn't signed by camp I think it's safe to assume he's gone. What's going to change during the season? The Oilers are at their "peak" now. If coming within one game of winning the cup isn't enough to keep Leon to stay then nothing is going to change his mind. Either he signs now or is gone in July 2025.
I expect the media and fanbase to make his life a living hell. Can you imagine how insufferable these people will be towards Drai (then McDavid) having them walk for nothing? This is all Oilers fans have had to cling onto since the 80s.

I think the best buds have already made their decision. They are inseparable. It is silly to think this hasn't been discussed over and over. My guess is they are gone.

My guess is that Draisaitl is only willing to sign a 1 year deal… that would take him to free agency with McDavid. The oilers would be terrified of that as a one year deal will immediately indicate to everyone that the wonder twins are gone in the summer of 2026. It will be pretty ridiculous for the oilers management or media mouthpieces to argue otherwise.
Draisaitl’s agent mentioned in early July that the ball is in their court… referring to the oilers management. If he was willing to sign anything with the oilers, you would think the oilers would put pen to paper. The only situation I could see that would be taking this long is if it is for a 1 year deal. But I bet it’s a “take it or leave it” from Draisaitl.
I bet the deal won’t be much of a discount but they might use performance bonuses that are guaranteed to be met in order to make them more cap flexible in 2025-2026. For example, I could see it being $10 million with a $3 to 4 million bonus for games played (something simple like 5 games). The oilers then get to defer that bonus cap hit ($3-4 million) by a year to the 2026-2027 season when they will be in a full rebuild anyways after McDavid and Draisaitl leave so they won’t care at that point about the cap.
Not sure if all of that is allowed under the CBA but we’ve seen that with other players on smaller contracts (eg. Brown).
