The Flames have 2 picks in the first round the next two seasons.
Next year they have 2 firsts 2 seconds and that is without trading Kuzmenko and Mantha at the deadline.
I don't think the Flames need a scarcity mentality.

Agreed. I'd want Laine + a prospect for a 4th or something otherwise let another team have him.

The only reason to trade for Laine is to try and rehab his value and get a better return for him later. What is the point otherwise.

So you just want to waste picks on the first big name that comes to market?
This is why rebuilds in Canada get screwed up. Not only are the organizations impatient, the fans seem to be even more impatient.

I would agree with you, except I don't feel that Poirier holds enough value right now to make it more interesting to trade him rather than to keep him.
Having Parekh on the top pairing, Brzustevicz on the second pairing, and Poirier on the third (and assuming they all develop well) gives the Flames a lot of options on the PP, and provides the Flames with high-end puck-movers from the back end who are able to transition quickly, as well as help generate offence.
He was weirdly ranked as having the "third best hands" in his entire draft class. He was a boom/bust pick, and I don't think he has boomed enough to build any sort of tangible value to make me want to trade him out yet, and those other defencemen won't be arriving until the 2025-26 season.
Solovyov will be on the team this year given his waiver status. After that, I think Poirier will be the 1st call-up for injuries, and I bet he plays 10 or more games this season, and more if he shows well. I think given Poirier's value vs his potential upside, I would rather hold onto him for at least this upcoming season, if for no other reason than to simply get a bit more information as to what his floor and ceiling may be at the NHL level.

Who said anything about the first big name?
I said no need to have a scarcity mentality.
Porier and Stromgren are not locks for the NHL. Trading them and a pick with the equivalent return to the business we did trading Bennett.
These deals happen, and Conroy should be looking for them.

Why? If the Flames were coming out the rebuild I would understand but what does Laine do for this team over the next two years besides helping them reach the cap floor. If he does well then he will need a long term extension at 28 or will get a late 1st at the deadline. I'd keep Stromgren and Poirier.

I don't know why people are talking about Laine like he is a washed up has been.
He's 26, and with exception to the Covid bubble season and the last year when his relationship with the CBJ team crumbled he was a walking 20 goal scorer +

and Laine isn't Bennett and the Flames aren't competing for anything. Sounds like you are just mad about the Bennett trade and want a revenge trade lol. Keep the prospects and picks and trade them when the time is right.

I worry more about his passion for the game. The skill is obviously there though.

He definitely isn’t a guy I’d want on a long term contract into his 30s

I think that you're being to literal.
I chose the Bennett example because 1. its a context and player we are familiar with. 2. it proves that young players entering their prime are more valuable than mid card prospects and picks.
You can argue that Laine isn't a good fit because he is 26, not 22 like Bennett was. But my point still stands that the Flames should be targeting young players looking for a change of scenery. Hell look at Sharangovich.
The Flames are rebuilding, that means trying to get better.
They did Step 1, maximize returns on expiring contracts, and all signs point to them continuing this, which is great.
Step 2, acquire young players that can help this team compete. We are just starting this step.
No one is suggesting bringing in Crosby or Tavares. But if the Flames are going to be competing again in 2027 a 28 year old 20-30 goal scorer powerplay specialist like Laine will be a nice fit.

We don't need 20 goal scorers on the team, we are trying to tank.
We are trying to reestablish Kuzmenko so we can dump him for more picks.
This team isn't even in year 1 in a rebuild, we are in no position to be trading any picks or prospects regardless of the prospect depth chart.
These guys will have more value when we are ready to turn the corner and add to the team.
Look at the last draft class, you do that next few drafts and suddenly we have the top prospect base in the NHL especially if we are picking high enough.
I trust Conroy and his actions have shown that he will not make a dumb trade for Laine. He has been dumping players for picks with no immediate help in return.
This is a trade Treliving would make. I think COnroy has learned from the previous management mistakes. Get as many picks as possible, and let the scouts cook as they have shown they are one of the better scouting departments in the NHL.

All Bennett proves is some buy low trades work, it is not definitive proof that it will work every time.
Sharangovich was acquired by a trading a pending UFA. If the Flames could flip a roster player for Laine then sure take a swing. If there is a buy low candidate that works age wise then take a swing. Laine is not that.

This isn't even comparable to the Bennett trade lol. Florida was trying to win a Stanley Cup so they could make that deal.
We are rebuilding. Not close at all. Bennett also didn't have a 8 million cap hit. I don't even think a contending team does this trade without retention from the Blue Jackets. 20 goal scorers don't make 8 million.

I worry about Laine bringing a bad attitude as he just doesn't seem happy anywhere he has played so far. Even if the plan was just to obtain a stressed asset at a discount, build him back up, then flip him, introducing a malcontent to a rebuilding situation isn't ideal.

Exactly. If they want get his cap hit off the books and give him away then the Flames can try and flip him like Kuzmenko.
