(feels so shallow to put something like this in personal terms; I'm fully aware the residents, the town and our collective loss for a beloved Alberta/Canadian town is orders of magnitude more important than my camping trip, of course)

I don't think it's shallow. Many many Albertans have deep emotional and nostalgic ties to Jasper and JNP. It's a crown jewel, that has housed many amazing moments in our collective history. Love and appreciation for our national parks is deeply ingrained in the provincial/national psyche. It is a place deeply held in many hearts, not just here but internationally. It was something to be justifiably proud of. I saw someone say that Banff is for tourists and Jasper was for us. I think that's true. Yes, Jasper gets its fair share of tourists, as evidenced by the evacuation but it is/was just a little more special, still a little more...wild. It is a loss of epic proportions, at every level.

And just to be clear, i don't actually disagree with your post; but you can't equate both statements as the same

If the community isn’t ready to be involved in redevelopment quickly development corps will move in to do it for them. Essentially they will prey on people desparte for cash to move on.
The community needs to be a strong early voice in establishing the vision for redevelopment.
If you look at Lahaina as an example the governor banned unsolicited real estate offers in the wake of their fire. They have also had record real estate transactions in 2024 as a huge shift in land ownership occurs as part of the rebuild. Shock doctrine is in effect, while people are concerned with it being too early others will move in quickly to leverage the situation.

Didn't our thoughtful, proactive provincial government cut the budget for those water bombers recently?
Maybe they don't stop the advance of those aggressive flames but Jasper only needed to make it another 10-12 hours for the rain to arrive. Maybe early action from the sky slows the advance enough to save structures.

In response to a question about their budget cuts to the provincial firefighting services Smith says they made the “appropriate” amount of investment in the budget.

Saw a new photo from last night showing a couple of those two story structures in the downtown area ablaze.
There's no way that much if anything made it.
Any word on the JPL?

Jasper Pizza on Instagram has stories of them driving through town. To quote them in the video "there's still a town". They have also said that their business is still standing.
Saw this on reddit as well showing the affected areas.

Stone and brick cladding, but not stone and brick structure.

That's good news, considering the videos floating out there didn't show anything standing.
But also looked like they were taken around the residential areas (which is awful).

Looks like the business or buildings beside the pizza place all burnt down.

The difference is that this is a national park and not just a random town.

I wonder if the rain saved the entire town from being consumed, or is this just the randomness of wildfires? Or of course the possibility that the firefighters saved some of the town.
