Default UFA Batch instructions and Batch 1: Deadline Wed 11:59 PM Calgary time

We will be doing free agents in “batches” of players up for bid.

I think we will probably end up having 5 batches, but it may change. The second to last batch will be an open one – for any remaining players, for all teams that have cap space for their bids. The last batch will be a second open batch, with the only difference being teams don’t need to have the cap.

Here are the rules for bidding on a player (NO EXCEPTIONS)
- You must have all players on 1 way contracts on your CPHL team. If we see that you have stashed a 1 way player in the AHL, all your offers will be voided
- You must have all players above the ratings threshold and 23 years of age and younger on your CPHL squad. If we find any stashed in the minors - all bids are void
- All offers must include ALL information required, as outlined below. If you fail to include something, your offers will be voided
- You MUST have cap space for the first year CPHL value of any offer, except for the very final batch, as noted above.
- Contracts are minimum 500K per year. Max 9.99.

- Submit your offers on the above players by sending an email to cphlufa@yahoo.com. These offers should include:
o The name of the player(s)
o The term of the contract
o The per year value of the contract
o The AHL% you are offering
 AHL% must be in 5 percent increment up to 50 per cent. You can also offer 1 way deals. You cannot offer 55% to 95%.
o Total per year CPHL value of offers being made
o Cap available (offer value must be at or less than cap available)

Please follow the instructions above. At each stage of the off-season people have submitted incomplete submissions for various steps. Since free agency involves competing for players, there will be no tolerance for errors. if you screw up - your offer won't count. that simple.

The player will be awarded to the team that offers the most committed dollars. Committed dollars= years of contract*per year value*AHL%

Let’s look at a couple examples.
This is what your emails should look like:
The Minnesota Wild submit the following bids:
Bill Bumface: 2 years @ $5M/season, AHL 50%
Hockey McStickFace: 1 year @ $10M/season, AHL 10%
Total CPHL value of offers: $15M ($5M+$10M)
Total Cap Available: $16M

Let’s now add another example and see what team would win the player.
The Boston Bruins submit the following bids:
Bill Bumface: 3 years @ 6M/season, AHL 30%
Hockey McStickface: 2 years @ 4M/season/1 way

The competing offers are calculated as follows:

Bill Bumface:
Wild: $5M (2*5.0*0.5)
Boston: $5.4M (3*6.0*0.3)
Boston wins the player

Hockey McStickFace
Wild: 1M (1*10*0.1)
Boston: 8M (2*4*100%)
Boston wins again.

Now, if two teams make bids and end up with the same committed dollars then the player will be awarded to the team lowest in the standings from last year.

Make sense? If not – ask questions! This is important stuff.

Here is the key thing:
When making sure you have enough cap space for your offers this is based on the CPHL per year $ value of the contract you are offering. When a player is awarded though it is based on the Committed Dollar calculation outlined above.

I should add that if you make deals that impact your cap, you have the option to update your offers. If you have less cap available you must still have enough cap available for your offers OR update them so you do.

Questions?

Batch 1 will be posted shortly.

Feels like the weakest Batch 1 I've ever seen in this league

Ugly list for sure.

Do we use the grid to bid or just throw numbers ?

Just throw numbers. Every year is vastly different so it's a really good idea to go look at previous years and see what people paid.

Here's last years batch 1: https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...=batch+results

And this is from 2022: https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...ighlight=batch

And 2021: https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...ighlight=batch

There is ZERO rhyme or reason or strategy here. Honestly most of it is just throwing darts and hoping one sticks.

This year seems different, cap wise as least, with 10 teams having more than $10M to play with on batches. I'm excited to see how that plays out.

So do we know what websites we are going to add for positions with Capfriendly being gone?

It would be helpful to know prior to bidding on UFA.

I tend to use Eliteprospects a lot. I think it has largely gotten better, so that one.

And maybe Puckpedia as it is replacing capfriendly? Although it doesn't list as many positions as capfriendly.

Capwages.com looks to be a scaled down version of capfriendly that has the same forward positions identified. Looks like a good resource.

Kings are in, too. I've done this twice before, and still have no discernable strategy. I think that I put in two competitive bids, and one winner, and expect to sign absolutely nobody.

Bid on 3 players, but likely will miss out on all 3

Looking forward to see what Batch 2 and Batch 3 have to offer
