Canes have made our first big splash since coming back into the league.

In a deal that had discussions start about 10 seconds after I was announced as the Canes GM, we have traded Zayne Parekh and and Lukas Cormier to Calgary for Trevor Zegras and Lucas Raymond.

Thanks to Ravi for the patience in talks as I familiarized myself with the game and explored a lot of different options.

I have wanted to add Parekh since the draft as I think the Flames finally have a top pairing D to build around. He has the potential at least so hopefully he is able to reach it.

The price was high as I think Raymond is an excellent young forward and will just continue to improve. Zegras also has a nice 3 year RFA deal so if he bounces back could be quite valuable.

Thanks for the trade 3thirty!

In a deal that took about 2 years, the Ducks have finally landed GM Simmer's personal favorite, Miro Heiskanen

The deal breaks down as follows

TO KINGS

Dalibor Dvorsky (10th pick, 2023 draft)
Otto Stenberg (25th pick, 2023 draft)
Shakir Mukhamadullin (20th pick, 2020 draft)

TO DUCKS

Miro Heiskanen
1.25M this yr

Dvorsky is especially tough to trade. We drafted him last year and have been following his progress closely. He was outstanding with the Sudbury Wolves last year and GM Doug Armstrong thinks Dvorsky can make the Blues this year. He's 6'1, 210lbs, a great puck handler and protector, great shot, and a centre.

Stenberg is a fast, toolsy centre who has 2nd line upside, and Mukhamadullin who has progressed a ton and will get all the chance in the world to be a Top 4 dman with the Sharks.

Thanks Harry Lime for the trade. It took a while to find the right pieces, but we got it done just in time. This does seal the fate of Colton Parayko who will get released now to free agency.

To Calgary
Artem Zub

To Montreal
Filip Mesar

We had to many D and decided to gamble on Mesar although he’s not a personal favourite of mine.

After long negotiations, Dallas and Ottawa have completed a trade:

To Ottawa: Dylan Strome
To Dallas: Filip Chytl
Samuel Helenius

While I really like Chytl, the gap between him and Strome was large enough to add Helenius, and his injury history is also a bit troublesome.

Thanks for the patience, torrent98

Ducks trade our 2nd in 26' to Washington for 3.6M this year.

I hate trading picks away, but I wanted a bit of extra room to bid on a few more guys for free agency.

Thanks Paulie for the deal.

the value for cap every year always amazes me. 3.6M for a late 2nd in 2026 is crazy

Appreciate you thinking my pick will be late. Draft picks are a crap shoot.

2 yrs ago I had a good team and finished 7th worst in the league.

The "cash for picks" market has been absolutely fascinating. I went back to last offseason and checked those deals, and the blueprint was basically 5m for a 1st, 2m for a 2nd and 1m for a 3rd. Then we saw the 5m for a 1st and 2nd earlier in the offseason, it got ridiculed, and now we see a swing in the complete opposite direction. I moved 3m last offseason for a 2nd and a 3rd ... now you get 3.6m for a single 2nd (and the original ask was 5m!).

Not a critique, just an observation. Demand and supply, I get it. Still, fascinating swings (even within the offseason) when you consider that the 75m cap never changes.

I think it is prolly also a reflection of how teams are valuing picks as well. It is not a bad thing for the league to have gms who have a long term view imo.

I do think it is good for the league as a whole to value adding picks but 95% of players taken in the 2nd round will be 69OV or lower.

Top teams adding over $3 mil in cap and keeping all their star prospects and adding cap to keep their stacked teams is more valuable than a 2nd.

Look at the free agent list, it's not pretty.

I think a good healthy discussion and disagreement is expected. Gms can run their teams as they wish and value things differently without too much group think.

I agree, I think I have been called out more than anyone for trades I have made.

These numbers are spot on IMO and something that should be discussed with new GMs. The only outlier here is when you know for certain the pick will be top 5 or top 10. Then I could see that $5m go up a little.

They are good guidelines, but things change every year which move the value up or down.

This year's free agent crop is older and not as good. That brings down the value of cheese.

Quite a few teams have cheese they want to move. That decreases the value of cheese.

Individual team's strategies vary...some look more long term and want to get some value for cheese.

If you don't move cheese now, it only goes down in value as after free agency most team's don't need it as much.

So I agree, those amounts are guidelines, but they aren't hard and fast rules IMO.
