We still might have won the trade had it not been for this extension.

Florida has a Cup.
They won by every metric so far. Guess we'll see how that 1st rounder turns out.

Dallas has a Cup and no one is bemoaning the Nieuwendyk trade.
Could have retained 50% and got multiple premium picks/prospects for prime Huberdeau at 1x$2.9M when the bloom was still on the rose.
Tre panicked, plain and simple.

The trade itself was actually great. The problem is Tre thinking this was a contending team after it was over.
Flames turned Nieuwendyk and Fleury into Iginla and Regehr, once upon a time. Imagine how loaded the prospect pipeline would be today if they flipped Huberdeau and Weegar at peak value and simply let Monahan rehab and leave.

The trade was fair. I'm still not convinced it was the homerun everyone made it out to be ignoring everything that transpired after.
We traded a 24 year old 100 point "unicorn" RFA for a 100 point 30 year old UFA, a 30 year old top 4D, a late 1st and a depth prospect.
Just as some random hypothetical but I would of happily of traded UFA lindhol, hanifin, a late 1st and schwindt for a petterson, stzutle or robertson level player.
I understand that Tre was backed into a corner and did the best he could. It was a good deal given the circumstances. It was never a home run.

The unicorn didn’t want to sign in Calgary and gave Treliving multiple options, which was completely unrequired and a gift.
Treliving made a good trade.
Then, instead of turning what we got into, say, Perreault, Sandin-Pellikka, Basha, and the Monahan 1st, here we are missing the playoffs with 3 retirement contracts. I think that level of talent is the minimum we would have got.

Treliving knew he was leaving , he went all in on a bad hand.
He doesn’t give a #### about the Flames future.
It wasn’t a good trade, it was a trade that he thought gave him the best chance to win before he leaves. Unfortunately he knows nothing about winning

Hi Knut! Meet Brad Treliving! Mr. Treliving? Knut!
Knut is an intelligent man. Mr. Treliving is stark raving mad.

You are mistaking the trade with the extensions.

There was no option for Treliving without the extension

Of course there was. Who wouldn’t have wanted Huberdeau at 1x$2.9M or Weegar at 1x$1.625M that summer? Teams would have been salivating at the thought.

Yeah, I still think the Tkachuk trade (once he wanted out) was a good one. If Tre had kept the FL 1st, and traded Hub/Weegar for futures the rebuild could be half over by now.

Nobody that would have given Treliving what he needs for one last push.
The teams that would want those guys would have been a contenders themselves. Treliving was not going to rebuild knowing it’s his last year
People keep saying he could have traded them for future but there was no such option in Treliving’s mind
He was only going to add not sell. That’s why he sold the future for Kadri

Yes, for sure Treliving’s fault. 100%. Flames ownership had nothing to do with handing out the biggest contract in franchise history only weeks after they were spurned by what could have/should have been a franchise icon.
You certainly seem to know who to blame.

This is such a bad take. He failed miserably and got the most glamorous GM job in the NHL. So it’s clear that it would have cost nothing to Treliving personally to do the right thing in Calgary.

That's true in hindsight, but at the time, with what happened with Gaudreau and Tkachuk, no one would have thought it was a good idea to go thorugh all that again with Huberdeau and Weegar. And there weren't too many people who though it was bad, either here or elsewhere.

I honestly still can't say if Tkachuk would have performed well if he had stayed in Calgary. Much like Huberdeau, he is performing at a high level when he is not the guy. He has the minutes and the points in Florida there is no doubt, but he is also sheltered by having a cast around him with the likes of Barkov, Reinhart and Verhaeghe, he doesn't have to be THE guy. In Calgary he was part of that top line Trio, but it was never fully on him.
Huberdeau had success in much the same way - he led the team in points but I never considered him to carry that team on his shoulders.
But now that Huberdeau has to be the guy with all the pressure on him, he isn't succeeding, and I don't know if Tkachuk would have been doing as well as he is now if he was also put into a similar position.
Maybe he would - the point is just that everything is easy in hindsight, but the return for Tkachuk was good and probably could have been managed better, and great on Florida for their success but I am not going to be one wondering what could have been if he stayed because for all I know he would have fallen as much as Hubs has.
