You can make arguments for Barkov and Bobrovsky, although I think Bob can be on and off. But there is no way he is the fourth best.
You ask 30 teams today to select one player to steal from Florida and all 30 gms take Tkachuk or Barkov.
|
Meanwhile 4 Panthers with Conn Smythe votes...none for Tkachuk.
Forsling is the new Barkov...most under rated player. He is a top 5 shut down D in the league.
Also, from the star it was right now so we arent talking about age or contracts. The draft thing is moving goalposts.

He led the Panthers in playoff points. But I guess journalists of similar ilk to the great Mark Spector and Jim Matheson should determine whether a player is good or not and certainly a valid proof point of whether a player is top 4 on a NHL team.

The whole Panthers team seemed to kick it up a notch after Tkachuk arrived, whether showed up on the scoreboard or not. The swagger he brought seemed contagious. I have no doubt that he makes a huge difference to the sum of the parts over there.

All the Panthers voters voted the same...take out the Oiler votes if you like. He did nothing in the finals. Was he their 10th best player in the final?
Anyway have your opinion...to say its "crazy" to say their #1 dman ia more important is wrong though...anyone who actually follows that team knows what Forsling is.

Re the initial point Huberdeau was making. Yeah it does suck, how do you think the fans liked that? We barely got 4 years of contention (with 1 playoff miss mixed in there) out of a core that should have had better results than it did. It should have done more. But it had to be dismantled and his performance is partially responsible

Florida's biggest worry about Huberdeau was how to re-sign him with a flat cap. It was pretty well publicized at the time.

They didn’t even try to negotiate with him. He was surprised they traded his ass. They had to pay Tkachuk almost as much. They just knew they can’t win him and they were right. They knew, nobody trades their leading scorer in their prime

Oh I have to give you two 30 year old for a 24 year old budding superstar? Well I suppose.

Or, they did want to keep Him and Weegar , but it came out that A young star became available. And if I remember correctly they still had a year left to negotiate with Huberdeau so really no rush to approach him yet.

Yeah if Tkachuk doesnt bail on Calgary, Huberdeau likely is still in Florida.
Zito was also trying to dump Bob. You have to be good but you also have to be lucky.

And they likely don't reach the finals, or win the cup.

Yeah, I don't think that's a good comparison either.
Bennett, on the other hand, is a great comparison for Lemieux. Both players seemed to find another gear in the post-season, and produce more, not less.

You’re gonna need more stamina if that thread is already exhausting on July 9th. Summer of CP takes people out but usually not this early.

They couldn’t sign him until July 1st and that’s when Tkachuk went in his RFA tour.

Using Conn Smythe votes as an argument for who are the best players, has to be one of the dumbest things I've read on here.
It's obviously a ridiculously small sample size, so let's expand it and consider CS votes from last year as well... Bobrovsky: 0 Forsling: 0 Barkov: 0
The only Panther to get CS votes last year was Tkachuk. So by the (ridiculously stupid) argument being made by most of you, Tkachuk was the best player on the team last year.
Maybe, just maybe, we should think bigger picture than "Conn Smythe votes, dude":

Totally agree. Bennett is a modern day Lemieux. An average 2nd line player in the regular season and a complete beast in the playoffs.

Citation needed. Where did someone from Florida predicted the level of fall off that happened?
A reasonable take would be that most would have felt that the risk of the deal was primarily:
- That Huberdeau wasn't a difference maker. A guy that put ups a lot of points but doesn't drive a team or a line.
- That the deal would age poorly
If you can show me where ANYONE predicted the type of production fall off, before the first year of the new deal kicked in - I would love to see it.

As far as I can make out, Flamesfan05's argument is that a GM's job is to know the future. Zito is a genius because he did. Treliving is an idiot because he didn't.
You don't need evidence for an argument like that.

From Feb 1-end of the season, roughly two and a half months, Jonathan Huberdeau had a PP GF/60 of 14.19. He was the seventh most effective player on the Man advantage in the entire league.
As soon as Lindholm was replaced by Kuzmenko on the man advantage, Huberdeau went back to being an elite producer.

Claude Lemieux scored 13 goals twice in the playoffs and won 4 Cups.
We’ll see what’s on the agenda for Tkachuk. Probably neither.

Lots of players crank it up when the pressure is off.
