There seems to be some confusion on that, there was a discussion on this one Reddit today too. The consensus seems to be they're okay now since previously they were explicitly mentioned as disallowed until they changed the wording earlier this week. The argument seems to be that since they're electric and don't use the wood for fuel (even though it's still burning?), and it says "Gas, electric or propane stoves, smokers and barbeques" are okay, people seem to be going ahead.

Personally I'd probably just give'r, but it does seem like a bit of a grey area to me

No, they aren't. The very first sentence says:


"Due to a major water main break and Level 4 water restrictions in the City of Calgary the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has issued a city wide fire restriction prohibiting the use of fire pits, recreational campfires, outdoor fireplaces and other open flame devices that burn solid fuels, such as wood or briquettes including solid fuel smokers and BBQs."


Later on, it confuses people by saying:


"The following are currently allowed:

• Gas, electric or propane stoves, smokers and barbeques that are CSA approved or ULC certified for cooking purpose..."

But I assume it is meant to be that only stoves, smoker and barbeques that use gas, electric or propane are permitted. Which is really stupid, as I can't think of a reason why a gas or propane fire would be somehow safer than a pellet grill.


It's just another cherry on the top of the #### sundae that has been the City of Calgary's communications during this entire thing.


EDIT: I should add that I've been using my pellet grill throughout the fire ban. Stupid rules are stupid and shouldn't be followed.

Better be carful. You don’t NEED a smoker. Just like you don’t NEED a lawn or a garden or trees or shrubs or flowers.

But you can take an hour long shower in your house. Or clean your bike in your garage (but not outside).

Moving to stage 3 restrictions. Can water outdoor stuff with handheld containers. No sprinklers or hoses. No window washing or car washing.

What they ste trying to ban is thinks that tip over and start a fire or would have spark/ash. It’s trying to ban the charcoal or Wood cooking devices and the pellet grill gets caught up in the ban.


I think it’s difficult to write bans without loop holes so better to over state and under enforce.

Yeah, doesn't that make sense? My patience to fill watering cans is a lot less than leaving the sprinkler going while I fetch another beer and forget about it for an hour.

It’s not reducing water usage. It’s just changing how you move it from your garden hose to the plants…. With an extra step.

But on aggragate the amount of water usage at each increasing restriction stage drops. So clearly just because you can do something doesn’t mean everyone does it.

So why is it stupid if it accomplishes the desired results.
