Conroy mentioned at the year end that he was going to talk to Kylington and make sure this was something that he wanted to do moving forward. I would assume that the Flames offering him a deal indicates that he still has a desire to play. I agree though that offering anything other than a short show me deal could be risky.

Yeah in three years he boosted Giordano, Hanifin and Kylington for pretty huge margins. Gilbert and Stone for healthy margins.
The only player better without him was Andersson.

I still wouldn’t mind if Kylington signed with the Flames but I think the hand wringing over him leaving isn’t warranted. Reminds me of people getting upset when Valimaki got claimed and Zadorov got traded. He’s a #4/5 guy who while nice to have won’t really sway things one way or another. Hopefully he gets a contract and can rebuild his career like Monahan did.

I’m really hoping the Flames have a couple Tanev-lites to go with all their offensive dmen.

A fan favourite for a vocal minority. Anyone with eyes could see he was a fringe NHLer at best. Quite possibly one of the most overrated Flames to wear the red silks. Good riddance.

I was replying to a post that said he was a defacto 3rd pairing.
Go reread the initial thread when it talked about him signing in Calgary. The consensus was he was a second paring dman who should be paid way more money (and term) than posters are suggesting.
Now, there were a number that were more leery of that. Now, 90% of posters are leery.

ANY deal signed with him based on his history would be risky. Just say no.

For a guy that is struggling with mental health problems, I can’t imagine how hard it’s gonna be on him if he doesn’t get any deal now.
The origination and the most of the fans stood with him through his struggles and absence and they cheered for him when he came back.
Personally, I don’t give a crap if he ever plays in the NHL again. He’s shown his true colors.

The vocal minority who filled the Saddledome and gave him a huge standing ovation when he came back.
Chill out with the edgelord stuff. Pretending he’s wasn’t/isn’t a fan favourite is completely silly.

No wonder teams (including the Flames) are hesitant to commit longer.

And it's not wrong! It sucks that he's dealing with mental health issues, but the Flames can't be in the business of handing out multi year deals to players that haven't earned it. I'd rather the team develop a player in his space that is itching to wear the jersey and potentially has a lot more upside.
Maybe he goes elsewhere and takes off, but he's 27 and the odds that he taps into something more than we've seen so far is very minute.

The barn burner guys summed up my thoughts pretty well. The flames did right by him, above and beyond what they were required to. For me, if he is not signing because he is thinking of going back home or hanging the skates up, then that makes sense. If he is isn't signing because he is hoping to cash-in in free agency, then this guy is lost and has poor representation.

Honestly? I think if you're dealing with Mental Illness you never really know what your 'True Colours' are.
Its just a bad fit at the moment.
He wants certain things, and thats fine, and the Flames need certain things. And thats fine.
But these requirements from either side don't seem to mesh.

They would have given any returning player from mental health issues a standing ovation . That doesn’t make him a fan favorite
I doubt he was even top 8 for fan favorite on the team just off the top of my head

Exactly. Fans gave him a standing O for his courage for coming back from mental health issues as well as in support of his mental health issue. I wish we can do a poll on those fans to how many of them will say " Give him the 3 years contract he's asking for cos he is our favourite."

I meant in regard to biting the hand that feeds you.
Loyalty means a lot to fans and especially when the fans supported you through hard times. This shows the man’s true colours, imo. I could be wrong

Fans are just **** in a lot of ways. Cheer guys on when they're on top, kick them in the throat when the same athlete is down. There's true colours being shown in this kylington saga but it isn't the athlete.

Business is business . But if he ends up without a contract the Flames should not sign him as a feel good story after no loyalty was shown.
And if they do sign him because they believe he will help the team I hope they offer him pennies on the dollar if no one else will take the risk

Who is “kicking him when he’s down “
1. He isn’t down , he’s unsigned , and by his own doing
2. People thinking he should have shown more loyalty is an opinion , not kicking him when down
3. People thinking his mental health issues could reoccur and he is a risky signing isn’t kicking him when he’s down
Truthfully I don’t think the Flames should sign him unless it’s at a discount because I think the risk is too high and the upside not worth it for a rebuilding team . Disrupting the lineup mid season if he has a relapse and potentially losing a guy on waivers to fit him into the lineup when you are rebuilding seems unnecessary especially for a player who showed they value money over comfort and support
