Works for the Rangers. They aren't able to have home games outside of MSG but they still manage to play at Yankee Stadium, etc. as the visiting team.

Smith not putting up much cash...similar to the CGY deal but we get a new arena and the development rights in the area.
Regardless, I would bet the ticket prices will be much more reasonable in Utah.

Will they have to bid on the land for the district?

Interesting that a meaningful "arena district" hasn't formed in SLC since the Jazz moved to town. Or maybe there has (I'm ignorant about the arena and surrounding area) and this extra dough is just to spruce it up with a new coat of paint?
Is one of the primary advantages of owning a pro sports franchise in North America the real estate play that comes from the arena operation? Seems like a trend more and more wiith new builds or with renovations.

It's truly an indication that this franchise has moved on from its Arizona past when these stories come out on days of the week other than Monday.

It has been many years since I've been to Salt Lake City and while I do like the arena I don't remember there being anything of significant interest around there in terms of pre/post game festivities.

Hard to say if it’s more or less universal around the land itself, because a lot of towns real estate isn’t as lucrative as Vancouver or New York. But there’s an opportunity to create a buzz by opening new revenue streams, like casinos, or hotels which would be valuable in many communities to get people to go there and spend their money, rather than just going for the game and leaving. It’s about the journey going there and leaving and how to extract money from each individual.

I don't know if you are suggesting a casino for the SLC arena district but gambling is illegal in Utah.

Isn't a lot of this tied to an Olympic bid too?

I can't imagine Bettman will be around when the NHL seeks another expansion. Hopefully the next commissioner will focus on more interesting locations than Phoenix and Atlanta (Austin, greater Toronto, etc.)

The NHL may not be done with Arizona, but nothing is going to happen until there's an owner and an arena (at least firm plans) ready.

I didn't known that. But I was speaking in generalities with a lot of districts trying to get in quick money. Ontario as a whole as another example tends to shy away from casinos for some reason (which is a good thing in my mind), but I don't think that's the norm across North America. It's all about milking for money somehow.
