Good point. Forgot about Morin. He’s still a good prospect with upside to be a cerebral, puck-moving defencemen in the NHL. He should definitely be included on that list.

Suspect on defense for sure.

I can’t say how the goaltending will fare without a proven NHLer like Markstrom.

TBD and definitely some ups and downs with Wolf adjusting to the NHL since we saw that in his starts last season.

Defense and goaltending can mask a ton of issues upfront, without Tanev, Hanafin, and Shilly it might be a rough year.

Hunt

Weegar-Miromanov
Andersson-Bean
Bahl-Pachal
Soloviov

Vladar
Wolf

With injuries/trades during the season, I would expect to see Honzek and Brz get some NHL reps based on what Conroy said in his last interview.
I think that's pretty close to what we'll see (barring further moves). You did leave out Rooney, who's probably the 14th forward. Might be Klapka instead of Hunt if he does well in camp.

One thing's for certain, they can afford to have a 23-man roster. They're barely above the salary floor right now. Cheapest team in the league at the moment.

with basically infinity cap space there wouldn't be much of a reason not to carry a 23rd player- mostly likely one of the older guys Rooney, Hanley, Duehr

edit- kinda what JR said just above me- Klapka a good suggestion too. I suppose the alternative is using the 23rd slot to rotate in and out younger waiver free guys you want to flex up and down

Would love to see Klapka make the flames out of camp. He seems like a bottom six forward that can be a difference-maker. A game with Lomberg-Posposil-Klapka as a line would be entertaining for sure.

After the Ducks added Fabbri ($4M), the Flames now have the most cap space in the league.

Never thought I'd see the day, what a difference a year makes. Now weaponize some of that cap space Conroy!

Yeah, stemit14’s opening roster looks right.

I think Klapka will win the spot on 4th line wing. He brings something the other contenders lack, size and skill.

make it two ... I believe there's a total of 4 players left from the roster that lost to the Oilers in the playoffs two years ago (Andersson, Backlund, Coleman and Vladar). I find it funny that the "R" word is apparently still a no-no, while they have completely dismantled that team from top to bottom

Hopefully it will turn into 2 by the deadline next season.

Not saying all 3 of those guys will turn out to be as good as Makar or Toews but having so many in the prospect system is the best chance of having one or two of them work out.
And don’t forget Morin.

For the people hand-wringing about being unexpectedly good next year -- good enough to finish outside of the bottom 10 and lose our pick -- compare this year's roster to last year. We finished in the bottom 10 last year, despite getting most of a season out of:

- Hanifin
- Lindholm
- Markstrom
- Zadorov
- Mangiapane
- Tanev

We have replaced those guys with ... Mantha and Bean.

This is a bottom 7- or 8- team, and very likely bottom 4. They'll try hard and be entertaining but you cannot be in the top 2/3rds of the NHL with this D and goaltending.

Edit: forgot Tanev!

The only way they aren't a bottom ten team next year is if one of the goalies really surprises and Honzek magically becomes a top 6 center next year.

And a couple of the defensemen take a major step forward.

And they remain healthy, and several guys have career years.

I'll throw in Huberdeau and Kuzmenko catching fire together.

I think Morin is going to be the #2 guy long term, if I had to pick someone from the existing prospect pool. If we ignore the existing Flames' roster and are looking purely at building a defence from the prospect pool, it certainly looks plausible to me, including at right vs left shots.

Morin - Parekh
Poirier - Brzustewicz
Solovyov - Mews

Obviously some of these guys will exceed expectations, and some will undoubtedly disappoint too, as this is the nature of the beast. That's a pretty darn good start though, right?

Then you factor in the other guys left:

Kuznetsov, Grushnikov, Hurtig, Jurmo, Jamieson, Boltman (if he is re-signed).

You also have Bahl (24), Pachal (24), Okhotyiuk (23), Bean (26) and Miromanov (26). Andersson is 27, and it is not out of the question he doesn't get re-signed, or even Kylington. Weegar is here for the next 7 years too.

This should shape up into one heck of a defensive group. It isn't like the Flames are going to stop picking defence. Sure, I would argue that Cs and even wingers now are probably more urgent, but they will still continue picking BPA in my opinion. It is going to be a very good, skilled and fast blue-line. Maybe not the scariest physically, but they should certainly put a bit fear in terms of their offensive ability and how quickly they will help the Flames transition.

It was a rather large weakness organizationally at this point last season. Now it is an organizational strength. Goalies and defencemen - that's what you want to have in place early on in your rebuild You literally can't ask for more than this, and yet there are still a good group of young forwards.

Parekh, Morin, Mews, and Jamieson will all (likely) go back to Jr

From that list, only 12 are likely to be in Calgary, which isn't enough to fill both rosters

Bahl and Solovyov will have to be exposed to waivers to be sent down, so I do think those are your #6 and 7th D for this year.
