Has anyone here ever taken the EMR course? I know that you need it to get into firefighting, and of course to be a paramedic. Just looking for a little insight into what to expect regarding course load, the exams...etc.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I've done it twice now.. One was a refresher though.

Its a mandatory prerequisite for the EMT-A which is a more advanced than the EMR course, and required to get on with CFD (IIRC).

Course load wasn't too bad, its really an advanced CPR/First Aid course. I think I did it over a few months each time, going to class once a week for a few hours for practical work with the other students.

For some reason, I never went and wrote the test for ACP (Alberta College of Paramedics) which is required to be certified and get into the EMT-A course, which is about 6 month course, and is a lot more advanced for the EMR.

It's been quite a few years since I have taken the course, but I would stress one thing:

Make sure that the company you decide to take the course with is recognized or acknowledged by ACP. You don't want a fly-by-night company (although this is more important for the EMT-A course) that isn't with the ACP.

hope that helps some... and like I said, its been a while, so a lot could have changed.

Interesting, I wasn't aware the EMT course afterwards was only six months. For some reason I thought it was a two year thing.

I'm signing up to take the EMR in September, should be interesting.

^^^The EMT-P (paramedic) course takes longer, maybe that's what you're thinking about.
