Thought experiment: Would you move Rasmus to DET for a package that included pick 15, a 2nd, either Joe Veleno or Jonatan Berggren, and one of Olli Maatta and Justin Holl?

I'd move Razz to Detroit for 15 alone. Let alone all that extra stuff.

Me too, then I would draft future #1 C Michael Hage.

There is a big downside to moving any more Dmen, never mind a top minute muncher like RA.
If you want to see Wolf develop properly at the NHL level, you best not try to do so with a defense that is already short 2 NHL caliber players....and thats IF Kylington reups here.
If you dont care about such things, then yeah ship him out for shiny new toys that may or may not have an impact on the club in 4 or 5 years.
Otherwise you keep ALL the guys you can for what is already going to be a very rough season or 3 ahead.

You even see it pretty much any time a team is in a position where they have to choose if they want to give up a pick now or a pick next year - if it was part of a trade condition for example. The pick could be outside the top 20 in the current draft but most teams would still choose to give up next years pick instead. Even if the pick was outside the top 25, I think most teams would choose to keep the pick now instead of giving it up despite the fact that such a move is likely not the smart decision. It’s the draft and everyone wants to make a pick.
|
I think a GM’s motivation to move picks, specifically first round picks, changes from year to year. I think we could see movement this year. Here’s why:
-cap is going up. First time since 2019, we will see a relatively big increase and projections are it will continue to climb. I think this will increase movement throughout the league.
-several teams, Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa, Utah, have added incentive to improve their chances to make the playoffs this year. Each team has been out for many years. Would have to think some jobs are on the line pending this years outcome. Several of these teams need to add to their roster now. First round picks can take years to get to a point of making an impact.

Yes, the question was specifically about draft day trades.

Get in there Conroy. Flames have the cap, the remaining term lines up with their rebuild window, get a 1st back and move a piece if needed to Buffalo.

Skinner is not waiving his NMC for another rebuilding squad. He will want the buyout so he can pick his spot which would not surprise me to be Florida, Vegas, Toronto, or Edmonton and play on a top team where he may get first or second line playing time. He has never played in the playoffs in more than 1000 games

Watch that be the play. Signs in Edmonton for league minimum.

At least he CAN be bought out. I still can't believe Huberdeau's contract is so toxic beyond the cap hit. I get the payments are more secure, but why would any player prefer to structure their deal that way and be stuck in a bad situation for years?
How long until Huberdeau is no longer the worst contract in the league? I say 5 years.

I agree with you, need to help Wolf a bit. I can honestly see them going after Skjei, or another bigger name UFA on D. They’ll need to overpay, but I’m not against it, if it means we get another top 15 pick.

I'm pretty sure Skinner has zero interest in leaving the East.

Any argue with that.
Skinner likely take a page out of Matt Dusvhene’s book and signs a cheap deal on a playoff team. Could add The Rangers, Stars, Avs to that list. Canucks too if they miss on Guznetzl.
He will have several options, I’m sure.

Any team signing Skinner should be careful. Even for league minimum.
That guy is Playoff repellant.
In fact, maybe we should cheer for him to sign the NJD or the Oilers??

Ya, if I'm Skinner I'm not waiving my NMC. Buy me out and I can go play anywhere I want. You just hope you can make up the $12.5M left on the table from the buyout.
